Team Blue Tops Orange At Illinois Intrasquad

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois swim and dive team completed its intrasquad meet on Saturday at the ARC Pool. Team Blue left the pool as intrasquad champions by a score of 150-138.

The day began with the 400 IM Relay, which featured the Team Orange squad of juniors Logan Kuehne and Sydney Stoll, sophomore Sara Jass, and freshman Abby Ninan emerging victorious. Senior Laurel Bludgen got Team Blue on the board with her win in the next event of the 50 freestyle.

Jass cruised to victory in the 150 freestyle for Team Orange, followed by junior Paloma Canos Cervera and senior Meghan Niziolek of Team Blue. Team Blue swept the only distance event of the day in the 400 freestyle; sophomore Adelaide Reaser placed first, freshman Kalina Nikolaeva second, and senior Cara Bognar third.

Team Orange would answer that sweep later in the meet in the 100 butterfly. Sophomore Alexis Wendel crossed first, followed by Ninan and senior Sophia Burwitz.

Stoll won the 100 freestyle, 100 IM, and 150 backstroke for Team Orange. Bognar crossed first in the 150 butterfly for Team Blue, followed by teammate senior Lily Olson. Freshman Kylee Sessions won the 100 breaststroke for Team Blue.

Team Blue swept the three-meter dive; in first place was senior Taylor Michael, second was freshman Matilda Garcia, and third was freshman Elleka Boeres. Team Orange got the event win in the one-meter dive with freshman Elle Crisostomo on top, while freshman Danielle O’Kelly and Boeres finished second and third, respectively, for Team Blue.

The final event of the day, the 525 Crescendo relay, secured the win for Team Blue. The team consisted of Boeres, Olson, Bludgen, and Canos Cervera.

The Orange and Blue swim and dive team begins their season on Saturday, Oct. 14, with a road trip to Kansas for a dual meet against the Jayhawks.
