Aspden, Smith, Abrahams, and Austin Named US Swimming Captains For Paralympics

Four captains have been named for the US swimming team at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Hannah Aspden, Lizzi Smith, David Abrahams, and Evan Austin will lead the team later this month.

The team will lead a total of 33 swimmers for the US. The women’s team has 21 members while the men’s team has 12.

Aspden is in her 3rd Olympics, after qualifying at age 16 in 2016 and returning again in 2020. She won bronze at the 2016 Rio Games in the S9 100 backstroke. She returned to the podium in 2020, winning gold in the S9 100 backstroke and gold in the 4×100 medley relay (34 points).

Abrahams is in his 2nd Games and won silver in the men’s SB13 100 breast while in Tokyo. This will notably be his last international competition after he announced he will begin a full-time job as a quantitative researcher with an investment management company after Paris. Abrahams was a co-captain alongside Aspden at the 2023 World Championships.

Smith is in her 3rd Olympics. She was a member of the 4×100 medley relay (34 points) that won bronze in Rio. She returned to compete in Tokyo, winning silver in the S9 100 fly and was also a member of the silver 4×100 free relay.

Austin swam at the 2020 Paralympics, winning bronze in the S7 400 free and gold in the S7 50 fly. This will be his 4th Paralympics after he also competed in 2012 London and 2016 Rio.

The Paralympics are scheduled in Paris with the opening ceremony on August 28th and the closing ceremony on September 8th. Para swimming is scheduled from August 29th through September 7th.
