Alex Shackell Jumps To 15th In Girls’ 13-14 Age Group With 1:00.34 100 Fly

Carmel Swim Club’s Alex Shackell dropped nearly three tenths off her personal best time in the women’s 100 butterfly during Thursday’s preliminary session at the Greensboro site of the 2021 Summer Championships, moving up to 15th all-time in the girls’ 13-14 age group.

Shackell, 14, produced a time of 1:00.34 in the event, lowering her previous best of 1:00.63 set in May at the MAC North Texas Senior Meet in Mansfield, TX.

That swim had ranked her 24th in age group history, and her clocking Thursday morning in Greensboro sees her overtake some notable names in the all-time rankings, including 2020 Olympic medalists Katie McLaughlin (1:00.39) and Regan Smith (1:00.43).

Shackell will be the youngest swimmer in tonight’s ‘A’ final in Greensboro by two years, with the next-youngest being 16-year-old Tess Howley (tied for 10th on the all-time 13-14 list), who advanced fifth in 1:00.50.

Shackell sits third overall behind Planter Swim Aquatics’ Sara Stotler (1:00.23) and Columbus Aquatics’ Leah Gingrich (1:00.31).

Earlier in the meet, Shackell placed fifth in the final of the 200 fly, lowering her best time down to 2:14.44, and added a 16th-place finish in the 200 freestyle (2:05.30). She also led off Carmel’s third-place-finishing 400 free relay in 57.86, with her 100 free PB standing at 56.36.
