Claire Weinstein Sans Katie Grimes or Bella Sims to Train with: “Now I have to race the boys”

2025 Pro Swim Series – Fort Lauderdale

In Ft Lauderdale, Claire Weinstein was the only swimmer to takedown a red-hot Katie Ledecky, getting her hand on the wall first in the 200 free in a world-leading 1:54.93. Weinstein, who also went a lifetime best 4:01 in the 400 free, says that training as of late has been good but challenging.

Without her longtime training partners Katie Grimes and Bella Sims, who have both now departed the Sandpipers for college, Weinstein has been forced to race her male teammates, meaning attacking sets more on the front end and feeling the pain from that on the backend.

A time of 1:54.37 should be the target in the W 200 FR at the National Championships to match Yang Junxuan’s personal best time.

Kind of remarkable how good Claire is and yet she finds a way to fly under the radar. That recent 4:01 is such an underrated swim. Given her youth and that the 200m free has seemingly become her baby, that 1:52 territory really looks vulnerable at some point.

Claire gets sick so much… Every meet I feel like she’s “I was really sick”…. Hopefully she’s okay

Claire is getting better with her interviews. I didn’t know she was sick at trials.

She didn’t sound that excited about open water.

Swimming and public speaking are very different skill sets, but for any swimmer who expects to make a US roster, it’s a good idea to practice interviews.
