Gretchen Walsh Eyeing 53 in 100 Fly: “I really want to… be the first female to ever do that”

2026 Pro Swim Series – Indianapolis

Video captured by Anya Pelshaw.

Gretchen Walsh continues to dazzle in the 100 fly, which has truly become *her* event. She recorded a 55.00 to take the win at the Indianapolis Pro Swim, the 5th fastest performance ever, and somehow it felt… normal. While Walsh was happy with the swim, she is always chasing more. A best time, a world record… a new barrier.

Walsh admitted that at some point in the future, after she’s already become the first and only woman to break the 55-second barrier, she wants to become the first woman to break the 54-second barrier. And to be honest, watching the trajectory she’s on, it feel like it’s not a matter of if, but when.

I love it when athletes are so bold and open about their goals. 53 sounds literally insane to me, but if anyone can do it…

To be fair, people didn’t have issue with him speaking about his goals at first. The main thing is he keeps getting slower and slower, yet his goals are getting bigger and bigger.
His remarks on Cal and Florida don’t help either.

Gretchen seems to talk a lot before breaking WR whereas Katie just does it and then talks with modesty!

I personally love when swimmers vocalize their goals. People like you make the swim community soft.

Prideful yapping versus a humble and grateful response

Don’t get me wrong – I love the grace and modesty of Katie Ledecky, but it makes the sport more entertaining when swimmers announce their goals, even if they end up not achieving them. Also, it really isn’t that far fetched for her to drop .34.

I initially had the same thought, but I mean, “I want to PR by three tenths” doesn’t sound nearly as wild
