Shaine Casas once again walked away from a Pro Swim with multiple wins. The Paris Olympian touched first in the 100 free, 200 IM, and 50 back in Ft Lauderdale. He also recorded the 2nd fastest time of the field in the 200 free (winning the B-final) and placed 3rd in the 50 back.
Looking ahead to world champ trials in June, Casas is unsure of his exact event lineup, but is most certain that he will at least be swimming the 100 fly and 200 IM.
Honestly this year there might be a window to get in and get an individual world title this summer in an event depending on the shape he’ll be in and the rest of the world but he has a legit chance to this year
i think the universe of his events are probably 100-200 free, 50-100 back, 50-100 fly, 200 im
i think he should swim the 100-200 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 200 im. that would mean one event a day and no doubles at trials. he could figure out / drop events as necessary after trials based on his results & the worlds schedule.
the only potential doubles at trials are the 200 free / 50 fly & 100 fly / 50 back — he could swim the 50s since theyre toward the end of their respective days but feels a bit like overkill lol and he should focus on relay relevant events
Idk what to make of his backstroke and seems like he isn’t sure either. I’m pretty confident he does 50 back and maybe 50 fly though, he seems hyped the 50’s got added to LA
heck, make him do breastroke maybe he is the missing link for the US relay
Should give the 1 back a shot but those are definitely his best events. Think he could get to 47 high as well to get a relay spot
Casas peaked at Westmont PSS last time. He and Bob need to figure out his taper. Imagine getting crushed every day by Hobson, Kos, Foster, and Marchand. Strange watching Urlando excel at back and Casas excel at fly.
most of the events on the mens side are soft enough that shaine doesnt even need to go much faster than his westmont times to lock up a bunch of spots on the team lol
Wild to criticize one of the top swimmers we have right now. Casas is the kind of athlete who would thrive under a coach like Bob Bowman — and Bowman himself has said he loves training him.
Happy to see him thriving this year
Hope this is a new chapter for him under Bob and that he can perform under pressure!!!
