The 2025 Bulgarian Open Team Championships wrapped up over the weekend with the three-day affair representing a qualification opportunity for this summer’s World Championships.

19-year-old Petar Mitsin was among those who competed, with the World Junior Championships and European Junior Championships gold medalist taking on the men’s 200m fly.

Mitsin turned in a time of 1:56.29 to handily defeat the field.

The next-closest competitor was Pavel Batinov who logged 2:05.88 for silver while Aleksandar Dimitrov rounded out the podium well behind in 2:12.48.

Mitsin split 25.76/29.46/30.16/30.91 to get the job done, establishing a new lifetime best in the process. Entering this competition, the teen’s career-quickest 200m fly mark stood at the 1:56.35 notched in May of last year.

Mitsin’s performance cleared the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 1:56.51 needed to qualify for Singapore and he now represents the 6th-swiftest performer in the world thus far this season.

Mitsin also raced in the 100m fly where he turned in a time of 53.41 to grab the gold. That also checked in as a new PB and marked his first-ever foray under the 54-second barrier.

Unfortunately, Mitsin needed to hit at least a time of 51.77 in order to add the event to his World Championships lineup.

Mitsin owns three Bulgarian long course national records, courtesy of his breakthrough performances at the 2023 European Junior Championships.

There in Belgrade, the then-17-year-old fired off lifetime bests of 1:46.50 in the 400m free, 3:44.31 in the 400m free and 7:47.45 in the 800m free.

He competed at the 2024 Olympic Games but did not advance in either of his events. His time of 3:49.30 in the 400m free rendered him 21st while his 1:57.03 in the 200m fly placed him 19th overall.
