Day 3 of the 2024 BRICS Games wrapped up in Kazan with multiple high-profile athletes back in the water to rack up more hardware.
As a refresher, BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. The Games include 27 sporting disciplines and have been previously held in 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Day 3 Highlights
The men’s 400m IM saw Yaroslav Loze punch a time of 4:16.69 to take the top spot, beating runner-up Stephan Steverink of Brazil by just under a second. Steverink logged 4:17.55.
Yaroslav Sokolovskii of Russia rounded out the podium in 4:22.87.
Loze’s effort represents his first-ever foray under the 4;20 barrier, crushing his previous personal best of 4:20.92 clocked en route to victory at the 2023 CIS Games. He now represents Russia’s 7th-quickest men’s 400mIM performer of all time.
Belarus got on the board, courtesy of Anastasiya Kuliashova in the women’s 100mfly.
Kuliashova produced a gold medal-worthy result of 57.91 as the decisive winner, posting the 2nd-fastest time of her career in the process. She’s been as fast as 57.80 from winning bronze at the 2022 Solidarity Games.
Brazil’s Beatriz Bezerra settled for silver in 59.41 while Russian Vlada Eggi bagged the bronze in 59.61.
The men’s 50m fly saw Grigori Pekarski get the job done, turning in a time of 23.42 for gold. He and fellow Belarusian Arseni Barzhakou made it a 1-2 finish with Barzhakou punching 23.72 as the silver medalist.
Ghana’s Abeku Gyekye Jackson also landed on the podium in sub-24-second territory, posting 23.87 for bronze.
Additional Winners
- Russian Miron Lifincev continued his reign over the backstroke events, stopping the clock at 53.51 for the win.
- The women’s 50m breast saw Alina Zmushka of Belarus also rack up another victory, logging 30.94 as the victor.
- Belarusian Ilya Shymanovich completed his trifecta of breaststroke wins, taking the 200m race in 2:13.96.
