Campeonato Nacional: 2015 Mexican Nationals Recap

The 2015 Mexican Nationals took place over the weekend in Guadalajara, with the nation’s swimmers out in full force.  Several men and women raced their way to multiple event wins while striving to attain cuts for the upcoming FINA World Championships.

20-year old Estela Davis Ortiz from Club Chihuahua snagged a trifecta of backstroke wins, claiming golds in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke race at the championships.  Ortiz dominated the field by over a second in the 50 sprint distance, clocking a 30.14 and also crushed the competition by almost 3 seconds in the 100 with a time of 1:03.88.  The sweep was complete with her 2:17.07 clocking in the 200m backstroke.

Estado de Mexico’s Ana Daniela Carrillo Avilez followed suit by throwing down a series of wins in the breaststroke discipline.  Avilez earned the 50m breaststroke gold in a time of 33.52, then piled on additional hardware in the 100m breast and 200m breast contests, where she registered times of 1:10.64 and 2:36.22, respectively.

The men’s side saw 24-year old Alejandro Escudero Alvarez nail down three victories, topping the podium in two butterfly showdowns and the splash n’ dash freestyle.  Alvarez touched the wall first in the 50m butterfly with a time of 25.09 and the 100m butterfly in a time of 55.02.  Alvarez’s time of 23.54 was enough to claim gold in the 50m freestyle.

Aguascalientes swimmer Horus Briseno Ramirez was the national title winner in both the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke events, snagging gold in times of 58.00 and 2:05.51, respectively.  Jalisco’s Luis Enrique Campos Alpizar also nabbed a couple of wins, getting a gold wrapped around his neck for his time of 51.57 in the 100m free and time of 1:52.86 in the 200m freestyle.
