31-Year-Old Barratt Sets New Aussie Record, Becomes 7th Fastest 50 Flyer Ever

2019 FINA WORLD CUP #3 – SINGAPORE

Day 2 of the Singapore stop of the 2019 FINA World Cup Series continued the ferocious speed we saw from day 1, with Aussie Holly Barratt stepping up to the plate with a big-time swim in the women’s 50m fly.

Going against her own domestic competitor and reigning Aussie National Record holder Cate Campbell, along with former World Champion in the event, Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark, 31-year-old Barratt stuck to her own gameplan to crank out a new lifetime best mark of 25.31 to take the gold at the OCBC Aquatic Centre tonight.

Barratt nabbed the 50 fly Aussie national title this year in a time of 25.91, but she’s been as fast as 25.67 when winning silver behind C1 at last year’s Commonwealth Games. As such, the Rockingham swimmer’s time tonight slashed .36 off the fastest time she’s ever been. Her performance overtakes the previous Aussie NR and Oceanic Record held by C1 at 25.47 from last year’s Commonwealth Games Trials.

C1 finished in the silver spot tonight in 25.49, the 2nd fastest time of her own career, while Ottesen was also under 26 in a time of 25.92.

From a historical perspective, Barratt’s performance tonight checks her in as the 7th fastest performer of all-time:

1 24.43 Sarah Sjostrom SWE 7/5/2014 Boras
2 25.07 Therese Alshammar SWE 2009 World Champs 7/31/2009 Rome
3 25.11 Rikako Ikee JPN 2018 Mare Nostrum 6/9/2018 Canet
4 25.20 Fran Halsall GBR 7/24/2014 Glasgow
5 25.24 Jeanette Ottesen DEN 2013 World Champs 7/28/2013 Barcelona
6 25.28 Marleen Veldhuis NED 2009 World Champs 7/31/2009 Rome
7 25.31 Holly Barratt AUS  2019 FINA World Cup 8/16/2019 Singapore

She should aim for the commonwealth record now but too bad 50 fly is not an Olympic event so she will likely miss Tokyo 2020 unless she can produce a fast time in 100m fly or free events or 50 free
