At first glance, looks like a big day for Harvard and a tough day for Princeton. Oooof.
Go Crimson
There is something to be said about the steady and consistent rise of swimming in the Ivy League. Lot of international talent (Millard, Finch, Dinu, and others, I’m sure) who could make some noise at NCAAs in a few weeks, not to mention some of the exciting domestic talent (Fallon, Kelly, etc)
I wonder what sort of “academic scholarship” some of these athletes are receiving given the cost of attending one of these institutions. Surely a 4:07 500 free would be able to attend most other schools for free or close to it…
There are zero academic scholarships at ivies 🙄. There are zero athletic scholarships. There is need based financial aid where you can be awarded different $ (named scholarships too) but the need has to be there. These athletes are paying full freight or receiving financial aid. Ivies have nice endowments and are able to provide good financial aid.
Just a point of clarification for anyone who might not fully understand Ivy mom’s comment: Students at Ivy League schools do receive academic scholarships, they just don’t receive them from the schools. They can still receive external merit-based academic scholarships.
financial aid is great at ivies
Many family members of mine chose ivies vs other schools where they could have had scholarships + fin aid. People thought my sister was insane to swim Ivy back in the 80’s when she could have gone to Texas, stanford etc. They paid a nominal amount due to their financial circumstances. My child chose ivy and we pay full. My husband was ivy and barely paid anything due to his family fin profile.
He might have the luxury of going where he wants to go (for reasons including but not exclusively swimming) without worrying about cost. Or getting a well-deserved academic scholarship not a “academic scholarship”. Not all great swimmers choose a college based on swimming and money alone.
