2024 U.S. Olympic Trials: #5 Madden, #11 Cox Out of 1500 Free (Day 4 Prelims Scratches)

2024 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS

Heat sheets for day four of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials are out, and the highest-seeded scratch is Paige Madden (#5) in the women’s 1500 free.

Madden has already booked her ticket to Paris at these Trials. On night one she recorded a runner-up finish in the 400 free, and last night she finished 3rd in the 200 free to guarantee a roster spot as a member of the 4×200 free relay. Her last event entered at this meet is the 800 free.

Jillian Cox (#9) is also out of the mile, as is Emma Hastings (#19). Cox finished 3rd in the 400 free on night one and still has the 800 free left to swim, an event she made the 2023 Worlds team in last year.

There’s only one scratch in the men’s 200 fly: Aiden Hayes (#11) in the 200 fly. Hayes only has the 100 fly remaining on his schedule. He’s seeded 5th there in 51.24. It will likely take a 50-point swim to make the team. He swam the 100 back earlier, adding a little from seed to tie for 55th (55.93).

Four men are out of the 100 free: Shaine Casas (#22), Daniel Diehl (#30), Hunter Tapp (#35), and Mitchell Scott (#55). It’s unsurprising for Casas and Diehl, who both have stronger events later on in the meet.

Three women are out of the 100 free: Katharine Berkoff (#14), Kelly Pash (#28), Justina Kozan (#51). Berkoff’s scratch makes sense, as she’s on the cusp of her first Olympic berth in the 100 back tonight after becoming the 4th-fastest performer of all time.

Will Scholtz (#46) is the only swimmer who scratched the men’s 200 breast.

There are a few swimmers who haven’t scratched events and will be taking on doubles tomorrow. That list includes Claire Weinstein, entered in both the 1500 free (#4) and 100 free (#32), as well as Carson Foster in the 200 fly (#2) and 100 free (#33). Both Weinstein and Foster have already qualified for the Olympic team.

Anybody know what is going on with Bella Sims?

Most prior olympic or world swimmers are having pretty decent meets, maybe not doing pb’s but also not that far away from them. Bella was 6 seconds off her 400 and 4 seconds off her 200 free. Her backstroke was ok but didn’t make it back to semi’s.

Feel bad – big fan, she’s a tremendous talent.

Curious to see how Weinstein does. Her 400 was very weird. I can’t tell if it was purposeful, like she was practicing for her 200 and shut it down… hopefully she’s in for the 1500, but if that 35 split was actually a piano, then i’m a little nervous

She admitted in a post-race interview on deck after the 200 yesterday that she had a bad swim in the 400 (but not sure if it aired beyond just the stadium). So I don’t think it was intentionally bad.

Looking at her splits, it looked like the 400 just spiraled a bit. She took it out too fast, started to die, and then maybe freaked out a bit and completely fell apart the last 100. Not surprising considering she’s still very young and it was her first trials swim.

She looked upset after so I don’t think it was planned. I think she was trying to keep up with Ledecky like she can do in the 200 and paid for it.

Surprised about Cox. Grimes looks fatigued due to the tough double and the 8K warm up yesterday, there might be an opening there

Jillian cox doesn’t make much sense to me, I feel like she has a shot with grimes only looking okay so far this week. Maybe hope is grimes is exhausted by the 800 and she can take her because she’s fresh?

Plus Madden might be all in on the 800 also.
Maybe we will have a great race for second in a couple of days

Yes. Pretty clear he won’t go the 100 free. So 2 lucky swimmers will have open water to 1 side in the heats this morning if he does DFS again.

There needs to be a rule against this at selection meets – it’s just bad for this meet format.

I’ll eat my car keys if Carson actually shows up to the double

Figured if Casas was on he’d have a decent shot in the 100 free to get a lane with his 48.2 PB.

However after the 100 back miss he’s not on, probably needs to be all in the 200 IM.
