2024 Paris Olympics: Gorbenko Scratches 100 Breast Semi Finals on Day 2 of Competition

2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games

Israel’s Anastasia Gorbenko scratched out of the women’s 100-meter breaststroke semi final in Paris on Sunday, opening up a spot for China’s Yang Chang to get a second swim.

Gorbenko qualified 7th in prelims this morning, posting a time of 1:06.22, which is just narrowly off her lifetime best of 1:06.15 that she threw down at the European Aquatics Championships just over a month ago. That performance in June also saw her break her own Israeli national record.

Gorbenko had previously shared her plans to scratch the 100 breast after the preliminary heats at the Olympics to focus on her other races. She pulled a similar move at Euros, where she told SwimSwam that her goal was to get the Olympic A cut and scratch.

“It was pretty hard because like, I knew I could win a medal, maybe even a gold one, but that’s what I’m going to do in the Olympics as well, just to get me going for the Olympics,” Gorbenko said.

Gorbenko is set to compete in three more events in Paris; she is the #12 seed in the 200 back, #7 seed in the 200 IM and #5 seed in the 400 IM.

Yang placed 17th in the prelims of the 100 breast, turning in a time of 1:06.91, a little over half a second off of her personal best time of 1:06.27, which she posted at the 2024 World Championships in Doha.

Sunday’s finals session kicks off at 2:30 p.m. EST with the finals of the men’s 400 IM and women’s 100 fly and the semi finals of the men’s 200 free, women’s 200 free and women’s 100 breast.
