2024 Olympic Water Polo: Women’s Group Play Round-Up (Through Day 9)

With group-play wrapping up on the women’s side in Paris, the rankings have been solidified heading into the quarterfinals.

Group A Recap

Despite finishing off the podium at the 2023 and 2024 World Championships, the Australian team has put up a fantastic showing in Paris, going 4-0 to lead Group A. The Netherlands are currently tied with Australia in total points at 10 each, as Australia won two of its games via shoot-out, however, the team holds a 3-1 record, loosing to the Auatralian team on July 31. With that 3-1 record, the Netherlands hold the 2nd seed in Group A. Hungary (2-2) and Canada (1-3) round out the group, holding the 3rd and 4th seeds, respectively. China will not advance to the quarterfinals after finishing with a 0-4 record in the group-play stage.

Group B Recap

Like the men’s tournment, Spain currently holds the top seed in Group B with a 4-0 record and 12 points, going undefeated in group-play. The US, having only lost to Spain, stands as the #2 seed, with the three-time defending Olympic Champions holding a 3-1 record. Italy and Greece are tied with 1-3 records to take the 3rd and 4th seeds. With Italy winning over Greece on August 2nd and scoring more goals throughout the tournement, the Italians hold the tie-breaker and thus have the higher seed. Host nation France did not advance, after finishing with a 1-3 record and loosing to Greece in their final game.

Quarter-Finals Schedule

With the seeds determined, the schedule is now known for the quarterfinal match-ups. Currently, Australia as the top seed in Group A will face Greece as the 4th seed in Group B. Spain, the top seed in Group B, will face Canada, the 4th seed in Group A. Meanwhile, the 2nd-ranked USA will take on 3rd-ranked Hungary and 3rd-ranked Italy will take on the 2nd-ranked Netherlands. All quarterfinal matches will occur on Tuesday, August 6.

From there, the semi-finals will be held on August 8. In the semi-finals, the winner of the Netherlands/Italy game will take-on the winner of the Canada/Spain game and the winner of the Australia/Greece game will play the winner of the US/Hungary game.
