2022 Australian Swimming Championships Dates Set

Swimming Australia has announced the dates for two of the nation’s biggest domestic competitions for next year.

The 2022 Australian Swimming Championships are now slated for April 4th-9th while the 2022 Australian Age Swimming Championships are set to kick-off two days later on April 11th-18th. The location and venues of each competition are still to be determined at this time.

This year, both the 2021 Australian Swimming Championships and 2021 the Australian Age Swimming Championsihps were held at Gold Coast Swimming & Aquatic Centre. The 2019 editions of the same competitions were hosted by the South Australian Aquatic & Leisure Centre.

In 2019, Swimming Australia held both its Australian Championships in April, and its subsequent World Championships Trials meet in June, with that year’s FINA World Aquatics Championships taking place in July in Gwangju, Korea.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, the 2021 edition of the FINA World Aquatics Championships were postponed to 2022, now being held in Fukuoka, Japan. Dates for the prestigious event span from May 13th to May 29th. The exact schedule has not yet been released.

With the Aussie Championships taking place one month prior to Fukuoka, this may mean these championships may indeed double as next year’s World Championships Trials.

I just hope that these meets are not held in Western Australia. There is no accommodation left as surf nationals are on at the same time.

Why is Swimming Australia one of the few AUS sports organizations not joining Sport Integrity Australia? With all of the recent allegations about weight shaming, harassment, discrimination, and militatistic coaching in Australian swimming (largely unreported by SwimSwam btw), it would seem to be the right thing to do.

Who said the bunch of ambitious bureaucrats at Sport Integrity are worthy of it?

Sport Integrity Australia is a government organisation (newly formed combining previously different bodies covering doping, corruption and abuse/harrassment issues). Its not a body that Swimming Australia would ‘join’ so not sure what you mean in saying the are not joining SIA?

They certainly didn’t need to ‘join’ for SIA to appeal Shayna Jack’s reduced ban.

I’m discovering the date of Fukuoka worlds next year.
Why is it so early in the year? Except Melbourne 2007 it’s usually held in late July.
It will be particularly tough for college athletes to peak in the bathtub in mid-March and then immediately start the long course season. Very little training period between both meets. It would mean that a triple taper (NCAAs/world trials/worlds) will be necessary in 2 months for college athletes who will be able to make the US team. Good luck.

Because the calendar that year is arranged around there not being an Olympics or World Championships:

June 25 – July 5: 2022 Mediterranean Games in Oran, Algeria Algeria
June 26 – July 7: 2021 Summer Universiade in Chengdu, China China
July 27 – August 7: 2022 Commonwealth Games, in Birmingham, England England
September 10–25: 2022 Asian Games, in Hangzhou, China China
