Syosset High School was only 9 points shy from winning the Nassau County Championship last year. This year, the Braves held nothing back and won the league title with a final team score of 406 points. Senior Michael Jiang led the way for Syosset. He broke the county record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.77 to take home the gold medal. Jiang also finished second in the 50 freestyle (21.26) and anchored the 400 free relay to a bronze medal.
The defending county champions of Long Beach High School settled for a third place finish behind Syosset and runner-up Great Neck South. Senior Ryan Aroesty finished first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.81. He then anchored the 200 freestyle relay with a 20.55 to give the Long Beach the victory. Great Neck South’s Andy Lee was a triple winner at the meet as well. He first took home gold as a member of the 200 medley relay. He followed up with a win in the 50 (20.82). Next, he swam a 45.36 in the 100 freestyle to win another gold medal. Sophomore Justin Whang was also a member of the first place medley relay. Additionally, he won the 200 I.M. with a 1:52.47.
Jake Newark of Garden City High School broke two individual county records over the weekend in the 200 freestyle (1:38.63) and the 500 freestyle (4:27.26). Not to be outdone, teammate John Protano took home the 100 breastroke crown. Following those performances, the duo combined in the 400 freestyle relay to break another county record with a time of 3:11.55.
