In addition to 17-year-old Rikako Ikee dropping her own 100m butterfly national record on night 2 of the 2018 Japan Swim, Kengo Ida also did some damage on the men’s side of the fly. Competing in the 50m sprint, Ida dropped a massive 23.40 to check-in with a new personal best, but also a new national record. His time tonight overtook the previous NR of 23.45

Ida entered tonight’s final as the 3rd seeded swimmer after his 23.95 outing this morning. But 26-year-old was able to drop half a second off of that effort to stand atop the podium, bettering his 4th place finish (23.70) from th 2017 edition of this same meet.

The newly-minted national record holder will contest the 100m fly later in the meet here in Tokyo.
