The updated psych sheets for the 2017 Atlanta Pro Swim show that 4-time Olympic medalist Penny Oleksiak has scratched the entire meet. Oleksiak was slated to swim six individuals event given the original psych sheet, including a highly anticipated rematch with co-Olympic champ Simone Manuel in the 100m freestyle.
Oleksiak was the top seed in both of her day 2 events, the 100 free (tied with Manuel) and 100 fly, and also held a top seeding in the 200 free (5th). Along with Oleksiak, there were a few other top-24 scratches for day 2 prelims.
Clark Smith scratched out of the men’s 100 fly, where he was the 10th seed. Smith competed in the 800 free last night placing 3rd, and will compete as the third seed this morning in the 400 free.
Other than Oleksiak, the highest seeded scratch from the morning was Fabian Schwingenschlogl, who was entered 8th in the men’s 200 breaststroke. The only other event he’s entered in for the weekend is the 100 breast.
Other top-24 scratches:
- 19th seed Miranda Tucker, women’s 100 fly
- 20th seed Yousun Nam, women’s 200 breast (out of meet)
- 16th seed Summer Finke, women’s 400 free
- 24th seed Jack Collins, men’s 400 free (out of meet)
CBC is reporting she is not competing due to family reasons.

In that case, we really don’t need to know more. I hope everything’s alright though.
You’re really not entitled to know more no matter what happened.
I want to know
Does anyone know why she’s scratching the meet? When there’s this much anticipation for the Oleksiak/Manuel rematch, it’s probably better to say something before people make too many assumptions.
The real match up will come in Hungary. I’ve heard she’s had some illness and injury this year so why travel that far when she could get some hard training in instead? Her coach makes decisions based on what’s best for her, not based on what us as swim fans would think. It is a shame not to see her swim though yes, but hopefully it means when we do see her in summer it’ll be worth the wait.
There’s also the possibility that she’s got too much school work to travel right now. There are a number of possibilities. I’m just saying it would be nice to have some sort of official word.
I see Van Landenghem also DNS today. Perhaps it was a team decision (or bug)?
Sanchez also DNS’ed too
Neither did Kayla Sanchez who also trains with the group. Of the High Performance Center, it looks like only Rebecca Smith and Sandrine Mainville competed today. Could be a bunch of them are staying home for some extra training instead.
Why does her coach even enter her in these meets and get everyone’s hopes up just to scratch out?
