Olympic champions Simone Manuel and Katie Ledecky are set to battle in tonight’s 200 free final after taking the top 2 seeds with their prelims swims on day 2 of the 2016 Ohio State Invitational. This morning, Manuel was the fastest, clocking a 1:43.78 ahead of Ledecky’s 1:44.67. Also in the mix will be their Stanford teammate Lia Neal, who posted a 1:44.87 for 3rd this morning.

In addition to the 200 free, Ledecky will also be swimming the 400 IM tonight. She’s the top seed in that race with a 4:05.71. To win, she’ll have to outswim teammate Ella Eastin, who was the 2016 NCAA champion in both the 200 IM and 400 IM. Eastin is the 2nd seed for finals with her 4:06.58 from prelims.

On of the top seeds on the men’s side this morning was Penn State’s Shane Ryan, who won the 50 free last night. Ryan swam to a 46.23 in the 100 back to outpace Ohio State’s Matt McHugh, (47.07) a 2016 Big Ten champion. McHugh is also in the 100 fly, where he’s the top seed with a 46.82.

How come no swimswam update for the final of the OSU invitation?

Can someone please put the result of the Stanford women’s 800 free relay with the splits of each swimmer? Thanks a lot.

Last time I checked…the men’s results were available….but the women’s weren’t. How does this happen?

Stanford’s going to destroy the 800 free american record! I thought Cal’s record would stand for a while considering they had Missy Franklin, Cierra Runge and Elizabeth Pelton and Caroline Piehl but Stanford could demolish them!

I’ve been thinking about their Relay lineups, and I honestly think it would be smart for Meehan to leave Simone off of their 800 Free Relay. Since she can only swim four relays, Stanford needs her more in both Medley relays, where they are very weak on breastroke. Simone could be the difference of as much as a 10 point swing (from 9th or 10th to 3rd or 4th).
The crazy thing is that Stanford could leave Simone off the 800 Free Relay, and they would still be heavy favorites to win. They could switch her out with Nicole Stafford or Katie Draboe who could easily go 1:44 or faster.
It’s sad because I would love to see… Read more »

It makes sense. I agreed with you. Heidi Poppe is coming around. She split below 28s in her 200 MR. She swam 1 min high at this time. Could go sub 1 min by the end of the season. No one on this team could match Hasse’s performance from last year. But you never know. Meehan could work magic.

Eastin and Ledecky duked it out in 400IM this early in the season. Both went 4:00s. Could see sub 4 min by NCAA championship. I am wondering what Ledecky will swim: 200, 500, 1650, 400 IM or 200 fly. I think she is a sure lock for 500, 1650. But 200 has many competitors. 400IM need to beat Eastin and… Read more »
