#2 Beats #1 to Shake Up NCAA Men’s Water Polo (Week 3)

There will likely be a new #1 in Wednesday’s collegiate men’s water polo poll as #2 UC Santa Barbara continued its tear up the rankings by knocking off newly minted #1 Stanford 15-10 on Friday, moving to a school record 13-0 start.

The Gauchos also picked up one of two overtime wins on the week, edging out #6 Pepperdine 16-15 on Thursday.

There was one more Top 10 upset ahead on the week as #8 Cal downed #7 UC Davis on Sunday.

Upsets

  • #2 UC Santa Barbara def. #1 Stanford 15-10 – The Gauchos scored the first two goals of the game and went on to a 6-2 halftime advantage. Stanford cut the margin to two at 9-7 and again at 10-8, before UCSB poured on five goals down the stretch, including the final score by Sean Rosenberg with 11 seconds left. Leo Yuno paced the Gauchos with four goals, while Nathan Puentes added a hat trick. Ben Hallock put in three goals to lead Stanford.
  • #19 Cal Baptist def. #18 San Jose State 9-8 – The Lancers boasted a slight 5-4 edge at the half, but SJSU countered with two goals in the third quarter to knot the score at 6-all and even took a 7-6 lead on a penalty by Marc Weber with 7:42 to play in the fourth. Cal Baptist answered with a power play goal less than a minute later and put in a penalty at the 5:38 mark to go up 8-7. Weber leveled the score at 8 with 2:28 to go, before PJ McDonough scored the game winner for CBU with 2:06 left. Gabe Thorne saved two SJSU shots down the stretch. McDonough, Logan Mena and Joseph Galgani each scored twice for the Lancers, while Weber paced SJSU with a hat trick.
  • RV Air Force def. #20 Brown 14-12 – Air Force used a 4-0 run to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead of its own. Two goals in the final 90 seconds of the first half put the Falcons up 7-3. The teams were tied at 12 with 1:11 to play in the fourth quarter but Grant Snyder and Henry Yavitt deposited goals in the final minute to give Air Force the upset. Reagan Pittman led the Falcons with four goals, while Matt Simko was the top scorer for Brown with three goals.
  • RV Fordham def. #13 Bucknell 17-15 – The Rams snapped a 24-game home winning streak for the Bison behind a five-goal effort by Dimitris Koukias and a hat trick by Jake Miller-Tolt. Fordham outscored Bucknell 6-3 in the third quarter vaulting into a 14-11 lead and holding on for the win. Rade Joksimovic put in five goals for the Bison, while Andu Vlasceanu added a hat trick.
  • #8 Cal def. #7 UC Davis 14-10 – Jasmin Kolasinac and Safak Simsek scored four goals apiece and Nikolaos Papnikolaou turned in a hat trick to push the Bears to the victory. Cal led 8-6 at the half and outdid the Aggies 4-2 in the final quarter to seal the win. Ten different players notched a goal in the loss for UC Davis.

Overtime

  • #2 UC Santa Barbara def. #6 Pepperdine 16-15 – UCSB stayed perfect (11-0) on the season, edging out Pepperdine on Thursday in Game 2 of a doubleheader. The Gauchos led 12-9 with 5:56 minutes to go in regulation, but the Waves got goals from Mate Toth (3:59), Sean Ferrari (3:22) and Sean Thomas (2:06) to tie it up at 12. Each team scored in the final two minutes to send it to extra time at 13-all. Pepperdine scored first in overtime, just 49 seconds in on a Balazs Kosa penalty, and kept UCSB off the board the rest of the stanza. In the second extra period, UCSB knotted it up on a Cole Brosnan score (2:20), but Chris Dilsworth responded just 17 seconds later for the Waves (2:03). A UCSB penalty shot by Nathan Puentes leveled it again at 15 with 34 seconds left and a final score by Brosnan, his fourth of the game, came with three ticks left to give the Gauchos the win. Puentes added a hat trick for UCSB among nine scorers, while Ferrari, Kosa and Toth each notched three goals for Pepperdine.
  • #8 Cal def. #18 San Jose State 13-11 – Garrett Dunn and Nikolaos Papanikolaou had Cal up 10-8 with 7:05 left in the fourth quarter, but Finn Pardon sent the game to overtime with two goals. The Bears seized the overtime advantage with two goals in the first extra stanza and maintained the edge to squash the Spartans’ upset bid. Pardon ended up with a game-high five goals, while Papanikolaou scored four times for Cal.
