On Saturday evening, University of Indiana post-graduateย Cody Miller became the third swimmer in history to go faster than 1:50 in the 200 yard breaststroke race, and the first swimmer to do so as a professional.
Miller swam a 1:49.74 in the 200 yard breaststroke to win the race ahead of Mike Alexandrov, and that leaves him ranked behind onlyย Kevin Cordes (1:48.66) andย Will Licon (1:49.48) in the all-time rankings.
The swim also stands as the 7th-fastestย performance in history, behind 4 Cordes efforts and 2 from Licon.
Miller has a history of swimming very well at the OKC Pro-Am since finishing his college career; he swam a lifetime best in the 100 at last year’s meet, and this year has gone lifetime bests in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes.
Is he swimming breaststroke or butterfly. Sure looks like butterflyyyyyyyyyyyyy to me
Here’s a snippet of the underwater view of Cody Miller from Duel in the Pool in GIF form:

I don’t have much of a fight in this argument since I’ve been out of swimming for 15+ years but it looks like he isn’t doing anything different than all the rest of the swimmers in this video. He does kind of have a funky kick but I can’t recall a recent meet where he was dqed. Not that I don’t trust public opinion but I agree with Bobo that a certified officials opinion of the legality of the kick would do more to persuade my view. Maybe SwimSwam could do a story on this topic to help eliminate the controversy?
I went to big 10s his senior year and remember Michigan fans getting all over his case for multiple… Read more ยป
I don’t want to see too adamant on this issue (I’m not) but I’ll just mention what I’m seeing:
Ignore the pullout part of the race. What matters is when he starts swimming on the surface. He’s the 3rd guy away from the viewer with the black cap. (I’d say the bright suit with stripes, but that’s everyone in the race)
You can clearly see his feet go up at the end of each of his kicks…and then down in a small dolphin motion. We don’t see anyone else in that gif whose feet even go up. Who knows how beneficial that is, but within my (and seemingly most people’s) understanding of the rules, that is illegal.
Michigan fans literally cannot accept that they don’t win every single event and if by some miracle they don’t, then someone must be cheating. This nonsense was started by Michigan against Kevin Swander (remember that?) and continued against Cody.
Here is video of his pull out from Santa Clara last summer. Slow motion of it starts at 1:29 of the video. Of the 3 people you can see in the video he and Lima both do the extra dolphin kick on the pull out (Lima closest to the camera, Miller second closest).

Just another reason that BR remains funkier than Ben Askren. Congrats on the spectacular swim Mr. Miller and let’s all just agree to disagree on what is or isn’t an undulating br/dolphin vs a dolphin/br kick. It’s all allowed now that the kitajimacat’s out of the bag.
Great to see that he finished right before the pace clock hit 00:00!
Big Top!
Dear Bobo,
I like to think of myself very learned in the technical side of breaststroke so I will attemp to tell you how Cody Miller cheats. Let’s break down his stroke. His arms and upper body work very swell together, he doesn’t come up too high or too low. Constantly moving forward accept for a slight awkward pop he has. It doesn’t distrust his stroke so it is fine. His legs are where the problem is. I have had a couple of talks with his coach at iu and a takeaway is that ray is a firm believer in the up kick at the end of the kick. This is used to keep the hips up, push the… Read more ยป
When you pull your body forward your feet are going to snap down at least a little. That us the reason why all of the breastrokers are not getting DQ’d on pull outs and their strokes. He isn’t dolphin kicking instead is just pull his body forward and then his feet come down. As a short axis stroke it makes sense for that to be the case.
Swimmer2 raises an important point here. Swimmers that pull high tend to snap/pull their hips forward “violently.” That by itself may lower feet. But there is a difference between lowering feet and snapping (kicking) downward. I believe there is no way he can change that now – he has swam like that for way too long. Two or more kicks on pullout, however, is blatant cheating.
Doesn’t matter why they do it, it is illegal.
Young T stikes again
Dear Harryp, thanks for your clear and precise answer.
I took you very seriously until the last sentence. ๐
Pure useless provocation.
But it’s your total freedom to vote for a brainless billionaire racist who is in the hands of gun and oil lobbies, who doesn’t know anything about the world outside of USA, who doesn’t know anything about the economy, the real economy, not multinationals which hide their money in tax haven countries, who would work only for the top 1% and who denies the climate change. I add that if you want to see another financial and economic crisis in USA and a war with Iran in the next 4 years, then yes, vote for… Read more ยป
Guys, please let’s keep the non-sport politics talk to a minimum unless it’s actually relevant to the conversation. Thanks.
Imagine how you would feel if you got 3rd at Trials in one of the breaststrokes and Cody Miller went to Rio and actually got DQed at the Olympics for dolphin kicking.
Can someone absolutely neutral and breaststroke specialist finally answer the question?
Does Cody Miller cheat?
I’ve a name in mind.
Someone who works for swimswam and who will compete against Cody Miller at next olympic trials.
Mr Jared Anderson for example. ๐
Close that endless debate, please!
I’m sure you have a pretty clear opinion.
If you don’t answer, then I’m gonna consider there’s an omerta in the breaststroke mafia! ๐
I think Jared Anderson knows better than to give an opinion on his competitors’ techniques. May you can ask a swimming official if there is one on swimswam
Michigan fan boys never cease to amaze me
