Kevin Cordes Breaks American Record in Prelims of 100 Breast at 2014 M. NCAA’s

Arizona’s Kevin Cordes, after the relay DQ in the 400 medley relay, has earned a modicum of redemption in his next swim. The fastest all-time swimmer in this 100 yard event has re-broken his own American, NCAA, and U.S. Open Records in the 100 breaststroke with a 50.55 in prelims on Friday morning at the 2014 Men’s NCAA Championships.

The Arizona junior was a 23.95 going out and a 26.60 coming home. In relative terms, as he’s worked this record down over the last two years, that was a pretty big jump for him. It improved upon the 50.70 he swam in this same pool, mid-season, at the Texas Invite in December. There, he split 24.42/26.28, and so his improved front-end speed here shows that a sub-50 on a flat-start is still not out of the question in finals.

Cordes now has the three fastest times in the history of this event, and three of those four have been done in the Texas pool. Former Cal bear Damir Dugonjic is the second-fastest ever in 50.83:

  • 50.55 (2014 NCAA’s)
  • 50.70 (2013 Texas Invite)
  • 50.74 (2013 NCAA’s)
  • 50.83 (2013 Texas Invite)

I think those splits from December are wrong. If I recall, he went with a clear lead at 50 yards, but the timing system screwed up.

My son swam with him in high school, and Kevin is a very driven swimmer. He will not wait to do it later. It will happen sooner than you think. We love you Kevin!!

If you think the neck is weird take a look at his chest some time.

does anyone know what’s the deal with his back? did he have some surgery? does this contribute to his insanely fast times?

Calling a 50.25 in finals, he looked really conservative for a 50.5.

It would be stunning.
I don’t think it will happen this year.
