Former Ashland HS Volunteer Swim Coach Sentenced to Prison After Contacting Abuse Victim

Former Ashland High School volunteer swim coach Camren Mitzel has been sentenced to more than three years in prison according to the Medford, Oregon Mail Tribune.

Last year, Mitzel was convicted of having a sexual relationship with an underage swimmer at the school and was sentenced to probation, but has now been sent to prison on charges of “sexual corruption” after reconnecting with her over the internet and trying to get her to come to Georgia where he is now living.

On Monday, in Jackson County Circuit Court, Mitzel (who also goes by Camren Teece) received a sentence of “40 months in prison and three years’ post-prison supervision.” He actually violated two terms of his probation by moving to Oregon and contacting the victim via social media and text messages.

The official charges were second-degree online sexual corruption of a child and violating his probation, downgraded from an original charge of first-degree online sexual corruption of a child.

The plan was thwarted after the victim boarded a bus for Georgia to visit him, according to Deputy District Attorney Terry Smith-Norton. The girl’s father found out about her plan and she was stopped in Arizona.

Mitzel is not currently listed on USA Swimming’s list of banned coaches, but USA Swimming confirms that he wasn’t a USA Swimming member.
