AgonSwim Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 7/8/2015

There weren’t a lot of meets over Fourth of July weekend so we were limited geographically. Nonetheless, there were plenty of good swims from swimmers you know, and names you’ve never heard of. Read up on the AgonSwim Weekly Wonders for the weekend of July 3-5, 2015.

Ansel Averitte, 15, Scottsdale Aquatic Club: 50m free (24.89) – Averitte swam his top two lifetime-best 50 frees at the Scottsdale Aquatic Club Summer Invite. He broke the 25-second barrier in the 50, and the 57-second barrier in the 100 free, for the first time. Averitte was four-for-four on the weekend, getting new PRs in all his events: 50/100 free and 100/200 breast.

Eric Uerling, 12, SwimTusla: 50m free (29.08) – Between prelims, semis and finals at the Stars and Stripes Sprint Challenge hosted by Jenks Trojan Swim Club, Uerling dropped nearly a second in his 50 free. He finished the weekend 2.6 seconds faster than he had been at the same meet last year. Uerling also earned new PBs in the 100 free, 50/100 back, 50 breast, and 50/100 fly.

Abbey Weitzeil, 18, Canyons Aquatic Club: 100m free (54.53) – Weitzeil, the national high school record-holder in the 50/100y free, scored a silver medal in the 100m free at World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea. It was Weitzeil’s fifth sub-55 of 2015, and only .15 off her lifetime best.

Briana Gellinea, 12, Long Island Aquatic Club: 200m free (2:09.28) – Gellineau broke the girls 11-12 Metropolitan Swimming LSC record in the 200 free by more than a second at the LIAC Time Trials. The previous mark, set by former LIAC national champion, Jessica Foschi, had stood uncontested for 22 years.

Andrew Benson, 12, Exeter Swim Team: 200m free (2:09.55) – At the Michael Boudreau Memorial Meet hosted by YNS Northshore Sharks, Benson won the boys 11-12 100/200 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly, and 200 IM. He picked up new times in the 200 free, 100 back, and 100 fly.

Jonel Escobar, 12, Hawaii Swimming Club: 400m free (4:38.40) – Escobar turned on the jets over the second half of the 400 free to win the boys 11-12 title by .20 at the 67th Annual Keo Nakama Invitational. It was his best time by 3.6 seconds, and fully 20 seconds faster than at this time last year. Escobar left the meet with new PBs in the 200/800/1500 free, 50 back, 50 breast, and 200 IM.

Jarrett Jones, 17, Cape Cod Swim Club: 800m free (8:31.89) – Jones earned his first national time standard in the 800 free at the East Coast Long Course Championships in Saint John, Canada. He dropped over 11 seconds to secure his first PB in the event in two years. He also picked up new best times in the 100 and 200 fly, notching a first national cut in the former.

Lilly King, 18, Newburgh Sea Creatures: 100m breast (1:06.93) – King went two lifetime bests en route to winning the silver medal in the 100 breast at World University Games. Her 1:06.93 in finals was the first time King had broken the 1:07 barrier, and was a mere .17 off the winning time.

Adam McDonald, 11, Cincinnati Marlins: 200m breast (2:50.63) – McDonald knocked it out of the park in his first-ever 200 breast at the Marlins Championship Qualifier/Time Trial Meet. That swim put him at third in the nation for 11-year-old boys so far this season.

Kylie Goit, 12, Plymouth-Canton Cruisers: 100m fly (1:08.51) – Swimming at the PCC Closed Invitational Time Trial Meet, Goit came within .18 of her lifetime best, and was nearly 7 seconds faster than she had been at the end of spring 2014.

Tucker Adams, 16, Indian River Aquatics: 200m fly (2:12.73) – Adams won the boys 15 & over 200 IM and was runner-up in the 100 fly and 200 fly at the TCSC Summer Area 6 Long Course Championships. He pocketed 3 best times in 3 events, dropping 5 in the 200 IM and nearly a second in each of the butterfly races.

Cassidy Liu, 12, North Coast Aquatics: 400m IM (5:25.33) – Liu won the boys 11-12 50 breast and 200 IM at the San Luis Obispo Firecracker Swim Meet, and had a number of second-place finishes. He dropped 36.6 seconds in his 400 IM, coming in fourth in the open (all ages) event. Liu ended the weekend with new PBs in the 200 back, 50/200 fly, and 400 IM.
