The Youngstown State men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs won 20 events in a successful meet against Denison in which 17 senior Penguins were honored.
James Slessor led the Penguins, winning each event he competed in. He opened his impressive outing on the winning 200 medley relay team. The squad of Soma Albert, Slessor, Gavin Redden, and Darren Laing clocked a 1:31.13 in their victory in the event.
Slessor tallied three individual victories, winning the 50 breast with a time of 25.44, the 100 breast with a time of 55.71, and the 100 IM with a time of 51.20.
For the men, three other Penguins earned multiple individual event victories. Rares Druga picked up two victories in 50-yard events. First, he won the 50 back with a time of 23.28 and followed that up with a victory in the 50 free, clocking a 20.30. Druga’s 50 free time broke the school record that had stood since 1984. In the 50 free, the Penguins went 1-2-3 led by Druga while Redden finished runner-up and Laing placed third.
Allison Ramirez Romero led the women with two individual victories, sweeping the 100 and 200 fly with times of 57.40 and 2:06.14, respectively.
Gavin Webb won both distance freestyle events, clocking a 4:33.43 in the 500 free and a 9:29.78 in the 1000 free.
Redden earned two victories of his own in the 100 free and 50 fly. He swam a time of 45.20 in the 100 free and 22.41 in the 50 fly.
The Penguin women impressed by sweeping the diving events. Ellen Linscheid earned the victory in the one-meter with a score of 253.35 while Hanna Held won the three-meter with a score of 278.70. In both the one- and three- meter, the Penguins finished 1-2-3 with Held in second and Emma Schum in third in the one-meter and Schum and Linscheid placing second and third, respectively, in the three-meter.
Three other women picked up swimming victories for the Penguins. Anna Kozinska touched first in the 100 back with a time of 59.25 while Miriam Frass won the 500 free with a time of 5:04.03. Oliwia Kaniak finished first in the 100 IM with a time of 58.56. Kaniak also added two runner-up finishes to her victory, placing second in both the 50 and 100 breast.
For the men, Ales Zupanec added an event victory to the tally. His time of 51.41 in the 100 back was good for first place. Chase Fyffe also added a victory for the Penguins, touching first in the 100 fly with a time of 50.33. Albert added an individual win to his relay victory as he finished first in the 200 back with a time of 1:48.61.
The Penguins also delivered numerous runner-up finishes in the meet. Hailey Clark placed second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:49.15 while Chiara Vetter finished runner-up in the 100 free with a time of 53.65.
Kyle Mizell was second behind Zupanec in the 100 back with a time of 51.99. Anna Kozinska tied for second in the 50 back, clocking a 28.03. Eloise Fisher was second in both the 100 breast 200 breast with times of 1:06.71 and 2:26.33, respectively.
Additionally, Dom Panozzo touched second in both the 50 and 100 breast with times of 26.46 and 56.98, respectively. Jasper Liekens and Terin Frodyma also earned runner-up finishes with Liekens clocking a 1:54.21 in the 200 fly and Frodyma swimming a time of 1:56.09 in the 200 IM.
The Penguins placed second in both the men’s one-and three-meter dives. Zachary Lao was runner-up in the one-meter dive with a score of 262.65 while Simon Iwanonkiw was second in the three-meter, scoring a 250.50.
On Feb. 3, the Penguins will host a diving meet in the Beeghly Natatorium as they face Duquesne. Action is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (January 20, 2024) – The No. 1-ranked Denison University women’s swimming & diving team racked up 17 wins across 24 total events in a non-scoring meet against NCAA Division I Youngstown State University on Saturday afternoon inside YSU’s Beeghly Natatorium. It was also a hybrid meet with multiple events being swam two times.
In addition to winning both relay events, Denison’s 15 individual wins represented 11 different athletes while Emily Harris (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle), Grace Kadlecik (50 backstroke, 50 butterfly), Zoe Barclay (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke) and Riley Tofflemire (50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke) each picked up two individual wins.
Denison started things off by taking the top-two spots in the 200 medley relay. Jassy Park, Tofflemire, Amber Croonquist and Kadlecik were first with an NCAA Division III National “B” cut time of 1:43.47 while Claire Moody, Drue Thielking, Emma Pritchett and Esme Wright were second with a time of 1:45.71.
Lucy Hardart won the first individual event, the 1000 freestyle, swimming a time of 10:35.98.
Harris (1:50.45), Quinn Brown (1:51.05), Taryn Wisner (1:52.06), Tara Witkowski (1:52.90) and Jena Lawlor (1:55.26) swept the top-five spots in the 200 freestyle with Harris, Brown and Wisner each earning a National “B” cut time as well.
Annie Pfeufer then won the first 100 freestyle with a time of 52.80 seconds while Natalie English (54.34) was third.
Then in the first 100 backstroke, Pritchett and Moody finished in first and second place with times of 58.46 seconds and 59.71 seconds, respectively.
Kadlecik was first in the 50 backstroke with a time of 26.86 seconds while Phoebe Ferguson (28.03) tied for second and Lauren Richner (28.24) and Rebecca Martin (29.24) finished in fourth place and then fifth place, respectively.
Barclay won the first 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.58 while Haley Thier (1:07.08) was third, Maja Palmroos (1:08.63) was fourth and Maria Mrosko (1:08.79) was fifth.
Denison then earned its eighth win in a row to start the meet as Tofflemire earned the win in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 29.21 seconds while Thielking came in third at 29.90 seconds.
Kelly Derasmo was second with a time of 2:07.99 in the 200 butterfly while Erika Schraber was fourth at 2:11.30.
Then in the first 100 butterfly, Avery Vogen (57.93), Park (58.09), Mrosko (58.53) and Nikki Barnas (59.91) swept the top-four spots.
Palmroos (24.31), Olivia Morse (24.57) and English (25.14) took the top-three spots in the 50 freestyle; and then in the second 100 freestyle, Harris (51.94), Lawlor (52.72), Wright (52.89), Croonquist (53.49) and Vogen (53.90) swept the top-five spots.
Wisner and Pritchett finished back-to-back in the top-two spots in the 200 backstroke with times of 2:06.21 and 2:08.33, respectively; and then in the second 100 backstroke, Sophie Kannee (1:00.20), Richner (1:00.29), Brown (1:01.58) and Martin (1:04.85) finished in order between second and fifth place.
In the 200 breaststroke, Barclay earned her second win of the meet with a time of 2:24.50 while Witkowski was third at 2:27.15.
Then in the second 100 breaststroke, Tofflemire also earned her second win with a “B” cut time of 1:03.22 while Ferguson was fourth at 1:07.40.
Pfeufer (5:08.68), Barnas (5:12.25), Hardart (5:13.73) and Derasmo (5:16.53) finished in order between second place and fifth place in the 500 freestyle; and then in the second 100 butterfly, Park was second at 58.91 seconds and Caroline Cavalier was fourth at 59.41 seconds.
In the 50 butterfly, Kadlecik earned her second win of the meet and finished first at 25.40 seconds while Palmroos and Croonquist tied for second at 25.44 seconds and Morse came in fourth at 27.12 seconds.
Witkowski (2:09.21) and Park (2:11.20) finished in the top-two spots in the 200 IM while in the 100 IM, Wright (59.83) finished second and Thielking (1:00.97), Martin (1:01.33) and Schraber (1:03.11) finished in order between fourth and sixth place.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Denison again took the top-two spots as Kadlecik, Harris, Palmroos and Ferguson were first at 1:35.63 before Pfeufer, Derasmo, Vogen and English finished second at 1:37.71.
On the 1-meter board, Lu-Si Minnich led Denison with a fifth-place finish and a score of 214.28 while Alexis Radhakrishnan (212.48) was sixth and Kerstyn Johnson (207.30) was seventh. Then in the 3-meter dive, Kerstyn Johnson was fourth with a score of 230.48 while Radhakrishnan (227.55) was sixth for the second time and Minnich (220.20) was seventh.
Denison returns home to the Trumbull Aquatics Center at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, for its Senior Day against Ohio Wesleyan University.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (January 20, 2024) – Ending the day with 11 wins across 24 events, No. 6 Denison University men’s swimming & diving competed in a non-scoring dual meet against NCAA Division I Youngstown State University on Saturday afternoon at YSU’s Beeghly Natatorium. It was also a hybrid meet with some of the 100-yard events being swam twice.
Denison’s 11 wins came with two wins on the diving boards, one win in the relays, and eight individual swimming events representing seven different swimmers.
In the 200 medley relay, Emmett Harmon, Elijah Venos, Richie Stewart and Luke Dauer (1:32.17) were second; Nicholas Settembrine, Teak Rommaneekochchakorn, Christian Narcelles and Matt Stankivicz (1:33.28) were third; and Luke Swiggett, Riccardo Ricciardi, Liam Nelson and Ryan Foreback (1:35.12) were fourth.
In the 1000 freestyle, Sam Myaard (9:40.26) was second while Max Hutson-Comeaux (9:53.90) was fourth and Jack Johnson (10:05.30) was fifth.
Denison earned its first win of the meet in the 200 freestyle as Narcelles (1:42.59), Patrick Daly (1:43.88), Foreback (1:44.27) and Venos (1:44.49) swept the top-four positions.
George Wang (46.94), Tyler Distenfeld (47.60) and Andre Beduschi (47.69) finished in order between second and fourth place in the first 100 freestyle.
Gavin Jones and Cameron Noble finished back-to-back in third and fourth place in the first 100 backstroke with times of 52.07 seconds and 52.11 seconds, respectively.
In the 50 backstroke, Settembrine was second with a time of 23.41 seconds while Shea Card (24.19) was fifth and Max Soja (24.65) was sixth.
Devin Testin earned the win in the first 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.05 seconds while Rommaneekochchakorn was second at 58.31 seconds and Josh Thomas was third at 58.44 seconds.
In the 50 breaststroke, Dauer came in third at 26.70 seconds while Owen Dy was seventh at 28.12 seconds.
Dylan Escano won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.88, his first of two wins in the meet, while Lucas Conrads (1:55.50), Luke Landis (1:56.06) and Max Lough (1:56.51) finished in order between third and fifth place, respectively.
In the first 100 butterfly, Nelson was second and 52.19 seconds and Connor Brown was third at 52.58 seconds.
Wang (21.70), Swiggett (21.80) and Rommaneekochchakorn (21.83) finished in order between fourth and sixth place in the 50 freestyle; and then in the second 100 freestyle, Stewart earned the win with a time of 47.19 seconds and was followed by Venos (47.77) in second and Stankivicz (48.00) in third.
In the 200 backstroke, Conrads (1:53.84) was second and Brown (1:54.19) was third; and then in the second 100 backstroke, Settembrine earned the win with a time of 50.56 seconds while Theo Wolf (53.06) was second and Distenfeld (53.22) was third.
Daly won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:04.79 while Christian McIntire (2:04.89) was second and Ricciardi (2:14.77) was third; and then in the second 100 breaststroke, Narcelles (58.09) and Wang (59.27) finished back-to-back in third place and fourth place.
Myaard (4:38.61) and Noble (4:39.95) went back-to-back in second and third place in the 500 freestyle; and then in the second 100 butterfly, Escano earned his second win of the meet with a time of 50.47 seconds and was followed by Lough (51.39) in second and Beduschi (51.47) in third.
Harmon finished second in the 50 butterfly with a time of 23.16 seconds while Testin was fourth at 23.23 seconds.
Conrads picked up the win in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.79 while Brown (1:57.12), Rommaneekochchakorn (1:57.60) and Soja (1:58.41) finished in third place through five place, respectively.
In the final individual event, the 100 IM, Jones was second at 51.49 seconds while Testin (52.67) was seventh and Narcelles (52.87) was eighth.
Lastly, in the 200 freestyle relay, Stewart, Daly, Dauer and Stankivicz (1:24.56) picked up the win while Swiggett, Wang, Settembrine and Beduschi (1:26.41) were third and Distenfeld, Noble, McIntire and Testin (1:28.09) were fourth.
On the 1-meter board, Nick Fogle finished in first place with a score of 290.85 while Brendan Stanley was third at 252.90; and then the 3-meter dive saw Stanley win it with a score of 294.60 while Fogle was fourth at 236.55. Both Fogle’s score in the 1-meter dive and Stanley’s in the 3-meter were good for a provisional regional qualifying score.
Denison returns home to the Trumbull Aquatics Center at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, for its Senior Day against Ohio Wesleyan University.
