Young Swimmers Lead the Way on Day 2 of the Central Zone North Sectionals

Day two of the USA Swimming Central Zone North Sectionals in Rochester Minnesota saw some fast swimming, particularly from the younger athletes in attendance.

Three 13-14 boys earned their way onto top 10 lists in the country, with new personal best swims.

In the boy’s 200 back, there were two 13-14 year olds in the event, both from Rochester Swim Club. Kai Joyner, 14, finished 5th at 1:48.07, a second-and-a-half faster than his previous best of 1:49.55 from November. This time also moves him to number two in the current season 13-14 rankings and #22 all-time

13-year-old Elliot Leasure went his fastest time in the prelims, coming in at 1:48.64 to qualify 5th overall. He ended up swimming 1:49.64 in the final, finishing 7th. His prelims time will move him into 4th this season and tied for 30th all time.

Kai Joyner also had a very strong performance in the 500 freestyle, where he finished 5th again at 4:29.74. This time was good for 3rd in the country this season among the 13-14 boys.

In the 100 freestyle, Joyner finished 16th in the final at 47.06 after swimming 46.37 in the prelims. Neither one of these were best times for the 14-year-old who has been 45.94.

Also in the 100 freestyle was 14-year-old Logan Engelstad, who went 46.51 in the 100 free to win the ‘C’ final and move up to 7th in the country for his age-group this season.

The 15-16 year old boys also had a good session. 16-year-old Blake Tebeest form the McFarland Spartan Sharks dropped more than two seconds in his 100 freestyle, winning the boy’s event in 43.65. His previous best was 45.80 from February of 2024. He will now sit in 4th in the country for 15-16 boys this season. Also in the ‘A’ final was Tebeest’s twin brother, Cale Tebeest, who finished 4th at 45.08.

Thomas McMillan, a 15-year-old from Saint Charles Swim Team won the boy’s 200 fly in 1:45.58 by more than two seconds over fellow 15-year-old Charlie Cancelmo. McMillian’s time comes in 7th in the country among 15-16 boys this season.

While she didn’t earn any top 10 spots, 18-year-old Skylar Knowlton from Phoenix Swimming (NH) won two individual events on day two. She started with a win in the 200 fly, where she swam 2:00.48 to add about a second from her personal best of 1:59.32. She went on to also win the 500 freestyle, finishing in 4:53.02. Her best time stands at 4:46.86 from February of 2023. Knowlton is committed to swim at Indiana in the fall.

  • Men’s 200 Fly: Tomas McMillan, 15 (SCST) – 1:45.58
  • Women’s 500 Free: Skylar Knowlton, 18 (PHX) – 4:53.02
  • Men’s 500 Free: Chase Maier, 17 (FOX)- 4:17.60
