NEW HAVEN, Conn.–The Yale women’s swimming and diving team was victorious over Columbia in their second official Ivy dual meet of the season.  The final score was 176-113.  The Bulldogs depth was apparent as they clinched eight 1-2-3 sweeps in individual events.  Two new pool records, one in the 400-yard individual medley, and one in the 200-yard freestyle relay, also highlighted the meet.

The Bulldog divers had strong performances against the Lions.  Talbott Paulsen continued the momentum from last weekend with a victory in the 3-meter diving event, leading a 1-2-3 sweep.  Teammates Lilybet MacRae and McKenna Tennant followed up in second and third place behind Paulsen.  In the 3-meter event, Yale swept the top five places, led by a tie between MacRae and Paulsen with 316.65 points.  Tennant was third, Hannah Walsh was fourth, and Samantha Trainawas fifth.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Yale swept first and second place; the “A” squad finished in 1:42.23 after an anchor leg by Kina Zhou in 22.34, the “B” finished in 1:43.44 after an anchor leg byIsabella Hindley in 22.57.  The “C” squad finished in fourth place in 1:46.54, pulling in extra points for the Bulldogs early in the meet.

The Junior Cailley Silbert led the entire race in the 1000-yard freestyle, taking the win in 10:02.87.  Teammates Kendall Brent and Carrie Heilbrun were right behind her in second (10:12.09) and third (10:35.20) place, respectively.  Silbert also teamed up with Danielle Liu and Olivia Jameson for a 1-2-3 sweep in the 500-yard freestyle.

Zhou led another 1-2-3 sweep in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 1:49.34.  She was followed closely by Lili Margitai, who finished second in 1:49.70.  Sophie Fontaine was third in 1:52.18.

Heidi VanderWel followed up on her success from last weekend with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.04.  Jacquelyn Du was fourth in 57.82 and senior captain Michelle Chintanapholwas fifth in 58.43.

Charlotte O’Leary snagged the top place in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:03.12, a full two seconds ahead of the field.  Pauline Kaminski followed up with a third-place finish in 1:05.66, and Alexa Kalandiak was sixth in 1:09.83.

Senior Sydney Hirschi  led the race in the 200-yard butterfly, leading a 1-2-3 sweep with a final time of 2:03.04.  Isla Hutchinson-Maddox was second in 2:04.89 and Beatrix Thompson was third in 2:07.09.  In the 100-yard butterfly, Margitai and Maddy Zimmerman paired up to take the top two places and Amy Zhao was fourth.

In the sprint freestyle events, Yale pulled in extra points with strong performances from seasoned veterans.  Hindley won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.39, Cassidy Richards was second in 24.21, and Mackenzie Franklin was third in 24.88.  Zhou won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.93, followed by Kate Rogers in third place (52.97) and Cheryl Xiang in fifth place (53.73).

Standout sophomore Destiny Nelson led the field in the 200-yard backstroke, touching in 2:00.55.  Chintanaphol was right behind her with a second place finish in 2:02.34, and Elizabeth Felix completed the 1-2-3 sweep with a third place finish in 2:06.31.

Breaststroker O’Leary led yet another 1-2-3 sweep in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching in 2:17.82.  Kaminski took second in 2:21.94 and freshman Ashley Pales took third in 2:22.10.

Nelson set a new Kiphuth Exhibition Pool record in the 400-yard individual medley with a final time of 4:16.85, breaking the old record by nearly four seconds.  Sophie Pilkinton took second in 4:27.20 and Thompson took third in 4:28.20.

In the final event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Yale’s “A” squad took first with a final time of 1:33.15 and the “B” squad took second.  The “A” relay (Margitai, Zhou, Richards, Hindley) set a new Kiphuth Exhibition Pool Record.

Robert J.H. kiphuth Head Coach of Women’s Swimming and Diving Jim Henry commented on the meet: “That was an outstanding meet for the entire team. They were ready to compete and improve upon performances from last weekend. Chris, Kerry, Monica and I are extremely proud of the effort by the swimmers and divers. It was great to see them enjoy the moment after several tough weeks of training.”

The Bulldogs will return to competition next week with their mid-season meets.  The divers will head to Virginia and the swimmers will head to Ohio for invitational format meets.
