LARAMIE, Wyo. (10/19/24) – The University of Wyoming women’s swimming and diving team cruised to a dominant victory over New Mexico at Laramie High School, by a score of 186-112. What makes the win even more impressive, is considering that majority of the Cowgirl swimmers competed in events outside of their specialties.

Head coach Dave Denniston was looking to be surprised when he tasked his swimmers to compete outside of their traditional events.

“This is the type of meet where you hope to see somebody break out in an event you didn’t know they were really good at,” Denniston said. “For instance, Veronika Ozimek crushed her 50-backstroke and 100-backstroke today. We didn’t even expect that to be an event and now it’s looking like it might be something for the season.”

Freshmen and veterans alike put on impactful performances for the Cowgirls, something Denniston is extremely pleased with.

Denniston said, “It’s encouraging to see our younger swimmers stepping up and finding their identity but also relying on the leadership of our senior and upperclassmen to just take care of business where they needed to.”

Freshman Macey Hansen continued her impressive form in the distance events with a first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle, going 10:25.61.

While senior Kayla Cunningham usually competes in the individual medley events, today she turned in a first-place performance in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.12.

Tara Joyce continues to be an absolute machine at any distance in the freestyle, which she showcased by soaring to first-place finishes in the 50-yard and 500-yard, with times of 23.56 and 5:15.01 respectively.

Senior Brynlee Busskohl took first in the 100-yard breaststroke by swimming a 1:04.59.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Emily Burchett came in first, having swam a 58.53.

Freshman Avery True took first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.03

Maisyn Klimczak won the 200-yard freestyle in which she swam a 1:56.41.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, freshman Emilie Coleman swam a 2:27.95 to claim first-place in the event.

On the 1-meter diving board, Alicia Gonzalez scored a 285.60 to take first.

Wyoming is back in action next weekend at Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colorado, with both the men’s and women’s teams competing.

LARAMIE, Wyo. — The Lobo swimming and diving squad, two weeks after a season opening split at home, heads on the road for a very tough opening season test as the team takes on the University of Wyoming.  The meet will take place at the Laramie High School pool starting at 10 a.m.

UNM is coming off a good opening week in which it lost a close match to North Texas and won handily over Western Colorado.  Wyoming finished second at the Air Force Invitational, a meet that featured Air Force, Colorado State, Denver, Northern Colorado and Wyoming.

The Lobos will have five divers for the meet Rithika Colvin, Alice English, Arianna Pelligra, Isabella Gomez and Zoe Rinon diving in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter.

UNM’s two relay teams will look for another good showing with Katy McCarter, Emily Fold, Jordan Foster and Arianna Stokes in the 200-yard medley relay and Foster, McCarter, Stokes and Linda Franco in the 200-yard freestyle relay.  In between, the Lobos will have nearly the same group going that swam in the opener.

Arianna Stokes will look for a second win on the season in the 50-free, and newcomer Ellie Broughton will look for another good time in the 200-fly.
