2023 PRO SWIM SERIES – WESTMONT

The final night of competition of the 2023 Pro Swim Series in Westmont, Illinois saw two Pro Swim Series records go down. First, in the men’s 200 IM, Leon Marchand cracked Michael Phelps‘s record with a time of 1:55.68. In the women’s 200 back, Regan Smith blasted a 2:04.76 to break both the Pro Swim Series record and U.S. Open record. All videos in this post are from USA Swimming’s YouTube channel.

WOMEN’S 1500 FREESTYLE — FINAL

23-year-old Beatriz Dizotti of Brazil battled 37-year-old Kristel Kobrich for most of the race before Dizotti pulled ahead in the final few 50s. Dizotti’s time makes her the sixth-fastest in the world this season.

Bobby Finke took control of this race, ultimately hitting the wall eight seconds ahead of the field. This trailed his 1500 free time at the Fort Lauderdale site of the Pro Swim Series last month by six seconds.

17-year-old Leah Hayes clocked a 2:10.03 to become the third all-time fastest 17-18-year-old in the event. She’s in range of breaking the national age group record with a lifetime best time of 2:08.91 and more than one year before aging up.

Shaine Casas pushed Leon Marchand under the Pro Swim Series record, leading at the halfway point. But then, Marchand took over on the breaststroke and got his hand to the wall first. They both cracked Phelps’s record from 2012.

Regan Smith broke yet another Pro Swim Series record in the 200 back final, winning gold with a five-second lead over the field. She also broke Phoebe Bacon‘s U.S. Open record from last year.

ASU’s Hubert Kos had never broken 1:57.00 in this event before prelims and then lowered his lifetime best time to 1:56.28 in the morning. He crushed that mark in finals, clocking a sub-1:56 time that would have placed fourth at the 2022 World Championships.

Lydia Jacoby and Lilly King shot down the pool, a similar showdown to what we saw in the 100 breast earlier in the meet. Ultimately, Jacoby hit the wall first and came within .10 of her best time.

Abbey Weitzeil has been on fire at this meet, winning the 50 free and placing third in the 50 fly Friday night. She hit the wall first in the 100 with nearly a one-second lead over the field.

The men’s 100 free was anyone’s race going into the wall with Hunter Armstrong, Jack Alexy, and Matthew King neck-and-neck. Armstong blasted a season best time to secure the win.
