Kierra Smith qualified for the 2016 Canadian Olympic team in two individual events: the 100 and 200m breaststrokes and will also likely be taking the reign on Canada’s 4x100m medley relay.
Smith started off the meet with the 100m breaststroke where she rocked a 1:06.93 to take the win over Rachel Nicol who also qualified to compete in Rio.
The time ranks Smith 15th in the world this season and as the second fastest Canadian this year after Nicol threw down a 1:06.88 in the heats at Trials.
While Smith’s 100m breaststroke speed has shown improvement, the 200m breaststroke is arguably the best race on her schedule. Smith most recently won gold at the 2015 Pan American Games in the 200m breaststroke and will be attempting to add to her medal count in the event come Rio.
At Trials Smith was a 2:23.91 in finals to take the win and get under the FINA ‘A’ qualifying standard. The time ranks Smith ninth in the world this season. She was hoping for a 2:22 going into the race, but told SwimSwam that she was still happy with the result.
