Virginia To Face Pitt, LSU This Weekend

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will compete in a two-day tri-meet against Pitt and LSU beginning this Friday (Oct. 20) in Pittsburgh, Pa. at the Trees Pool.

Friday’s competition will begin with diving events at 4 p.m., followed by swimming events at 5 p.m. On Saturday, diving is set to begin at 10 a.m. and swimming will begin at 11 a.m.

The No. 13 Virginia women’s team and the No. 22 men’s team enter the meet as the only ranked programs, according to the preseason poll by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

The Cavaliers enter this weekend with a 1-0 record after sweeping Penn State in their season opener. Senior Caitlin Cooper (Atlanta, Ga.), freshman Emma Seiberlich (Audubon, Pa.) and junior Kylie Towbin (New Canaan, Conn.) paced the women with two individual wins apiece. Cooper topped the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, swimming a time of 23.11 and 50.85, respectively. She additionally was a part of the first place 200-yard medley relay team. Seiberlich finished first in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.68) and the 100-yard butterfly (55.20), while Towbin swept the diving events, scoring 286.95 points on the 1-meter board and 329.03 points on the 3-meter board.

Redshirt junior Brendan Casey (Santa Monica, Calif.) led the men’s team with wins in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:21.77) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:47.69).

LSU also enters with a win in their opening meet. The women’s team defeated Loyola (254-34) and Tulane (175-125), while the men defeated Loyola 164-63 to open the season. Pitt opened its season with a loss to Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets took the men’s competition 168-132 and the women’s meet 183.5-116.5.

UVA and Pitt competed last year in a dual meet with Virginia capturing the win. Virginia won 27 of 28 events as the men recorded a score of 186.5-108.5 and the women won 187-108.

This will be the first regular-season competition since 2005 for Virginia and LSU. Virginia swept the Tigers as the men recorded a score of 161-74 and the women recorded a score of 163-78.
