Virginia Adds New Verbal to ACC Backstroke Dynasty

Hanna House has changed her commitment, and will now swim for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish instead.

The rest of the ACC has been busy this recruiting season, but the 6-time defending champion Virginia Cavaliers have now jumped into the fun with a verbal commitment from Carmel, Indiana product Hanna House. House was the Indiana High School runner-up last season in both the 100 fly and the 100 back, both times falling only to teammates as part of the Carmel girls’ swimming State Championship team.

House is a backstroker, which is a stroke that the Virginia women have had a ton of success with recently. They’ve won 8 of the last 11 ACC titles in the women’s 100 backstroke, and 7 out of the last 10 in the 200. That includes double champion in 2013, then-freshman Courtney Bartholomew.

In yards, House’s best backstroke times are 54.11 and 1:58.92. That means she’s already a scorer at the ACC level.

Like many of the UVA backstrokers, she’s also an outstanding butterflier. House has been 54.6 and 2:00.6 in the 100 and 200 yard flys (plus a 2:02.9 in the 200 IM).

Does House fill an immediate need for the Cavaliers? No, not a big one. She’s another backstroker that can fill in on the butterfly events if she has to. What she does bring, however, is another ACC scorer, at least, and a potential NCAA scorer on top of that. This one is right in Virginia’s wheelhouse, and if the new coaching staff continues the success of their predecessors with this type of swimmer, she’s got star potential.
