Utah Men Take Down Colorado Mesa, Women Reign Over Boise State

Utah Swimming and Diving put up a true team effort as the Ute men took on Colorado Mesa, while the Ute women faced Boise State today at Ute Natatorium. Utah collected victories from 13 different athletes as the Utes passed Colorado Mesa 187-107 and Boise State 188-112. Overall, the Utes claimed 24 of 32 races and went 3 for 4 on diving events.

 Men’s Meet

The Utah men came right out of the gate with a victory as Nick Soedel, Kyle Owens, Karson Applin and Bence Kiraly topped the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:36.06.  The win streak continued as sophomore Andy Cunningham came away with the win in the 1000 free (9:40.68) and Soedel topped the 200 free with a 1:39.35.  Utah failed to take the top spot in the 100 back, but Brendan Nguyen and Alex Brown claimed second and third in the race in 54.16 and 54.17, respectively.

Ken Tiltges then claimed the 100 breast crown in a 58.41 with Brandon Young close behind, finishing second with a 59.76.  The Utes went one, two, three in the 200 fly with Kristian Kron leading the way with a time of 1:51.00. Luis Macias touched in second in 1:53.10, while Applin rounded out the top-three with a 1:59.85.  Alex Fernandes recorded a time of 21.37 in the 50 free to grab first-place, while also taking the top spot in the 100 free in a 46.35.

Women’s Meet

The Utah women also began the meet on a high note as Traycie Swartz, Stina Colleou, Petra Soininen and Giuliana Gigliotti touched in first in the 200 free relay in a 1:43.97.

Swartz, Colleou and Soininen each collected multiple victories in their respective individual events. Swartz in the 100 back with a 56.31 and the 100 free with a 51.39, Colleou in the 100 and 200 breast with 1:04.57 and 2:18.19, respectively.  Soininen went on to win in the 100 and 200 fly with a 55.74 and 2:03.01, respectively.

Senior co-captain Samantha Zuch claimed first in the 1000 free in a 10:20.00 and the 500 free with a 5:02.10, while also taking third in the 200 free in a 1:53.63.

Junior transfer Amanda Barrett grabbed first in the 200 back in a 2:02.16 and second in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.89.

Nicole Ligeza snagged first in the 200 IM (2:05.54), while Gigliotti and Maddie Jamora went two-three in the 50 free in 23.95 and 24.35, respectively.

The Utes return to the pool as they take on UNLV at Ute Natatorium Nov. 8 at 6 p.m.
