US Closes Meet Strong With 2 Golds On Final Night To Top Medal Table For 9th Straight Olympics

2024 PARIS SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

The US trailed Australia since day 3 of swimming competition but a strong final day moved the US to the top of the medal table. The US has led the medal table now in the last 9 Olympics, with that stretch beginning in 1992.

Earning the first gold of the night for the US was Bobby Finke. Finke won the men’s 1500 freestyle in a new World Record of a 14:30.67. Finke also continued the streak for the US men as the US men have won at least one individual gold in every Olympics since 1900. The streak was at risk as the men’s 1500 free was the final individual event, but Finke came in clutch.

In the final race of the meet, the US women won gold in the 4×100 medley relay. Australia won the event in Tokyo and now silver in Paris, but the US could not be denied, winning in a new World Record finishing over 3 seconds ahead of Australia as well.

The US also led the competition with 28 total medals while Australia had the 2nd most with 18. China had the 3rd most total medals with 12 but only two golds. China picked up its second gold tonight winning the men’s 4×100 medley relay, snapping the streak that the US men had in the event.

I found it interesting that NBC commentator Australian Olympian, Nicole Livingstone (neé Stevenson), said basically that the US relies too much on college programs and needs to rebuild our system. I can’t disagree with that comment. Yes, we beat out the Australians and Chinese but 1 men’s individual gold does show a weakness.

I think she’s a very good commentator (I only watched the World Feed to keep down the USA screaming from NBC’s commentators) but I definitely think she’s wrong here. Someone needs to explain how USA Swimming could rebuild our whole system when they can’t take care of even small things. Three swimmers kept us from winning the Gold Medals we won in Tokyo – a great swim by Wiffen and Dressel getting back into the sport after a much needed layoff. And of course, Marchand in 400 IM.

Don’t understand why this deserves an article? We always beat the aussies when it matters most.

I don’t care what anyone says; this was one of the greatest relays in swimming Ive ever seen put together in my life. Absolutely superb all around. Hats off and go 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Well done America. Thank goodness I don’t have to read your dumb comments about cowbells for a while now. I’m sure you’ll drag it back out at the next big meet because you know, American. It’s hilarious that the comments are now so parochial when a lot of you were ready to torch your team earlier in the meet when you thought they were underperforming. Fairweather fans. Your excellent team deserves better. Adieu

You can’t be an Aussie…way too bitter!

Listen, we’re just used to a single swimmer earning eight golds, not the whole team. By what a way to close the meet!

So the Chinese win in the relay over the United States is reminiscent of the East German women’s doped up swimming dominance in the 1980’s which everyone knew about but did nothing about. Bad food? Yeah right.

Except that the Chinese standout on that relay, Pan, wasn’t involved in that group of 23.

Qin was also a standout on that relay, boasting the fastest breaststroke split in the field
