Brianna Cottingham will remain-in state with verbal to UNC Asheville for the fall of 2022.
The University of North Carolina, Asheville has picked up a verbal commitment from in-state breaststroke specialist Brianna Cottingham for the 2022-2023 season. She is a junior at Ronald Reagan High School and she is a year-round swimmer at the Northwest North Carolina YMCA Riptyde.
In February, Cottingham competed at the 2021 North Carolina HS 4A State Championships in the 100 breast. She touched fourth in a time of 1:04.08. She also swam the breaststroke leg on Ronald Reagan High School’s 200 medley relay, splitting a 50 breast time of 29.87. Her 100 breast time was a 2.1-second improvement from the previous year. As a sophomore, she touched 12th in finals of the 100 breast in 1:06.18.
Cottingham most recently competed at the NC YOTA YMCA Swim Festival, recording personal best times in three events. She swam the 100 free, 100 breast, 200 breast, and 200 IM. She earned a 2021 Futures Championships qualifying time in the 200 IM and a 2021 Winter U.S. Open cut in the 100 breast. Cottingham was second in the 100 breast, third in the 200 breast, and 9th in the 200 IM.

UNC Asheville finished 4th at the 2021 CCSA Women’s Championships. Cottingham will join the Bulldogs in the fall of 2022, with a chance to be a point-scorer for the team. Her 100 and breast times would have landed her in the A-finals at the 2021 conference champs, while her 200 IM would have placed her in the B-final.
Additionally, Cottingham would have been the team’s second-fastest 100 and 200 breaststroker during the 2020-2021 season behind sophomore Mikaela Fullerton and its third-fastest competitor in the 200 IM.
Cottingham will be a member of the Bulldogs’ class of 2025.
