HAMILTON, N.Y. – The University of Massachusetts men’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2019-20 campaign with a 225-61 win over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium. The Minutemen had five multiple individual event winners on their way to a win.
Freshman Jamie MacDonald picked up a pair of wins for the Minutemen in his first collegiate meet, crossing the line first in the 400 IM to open up the individual swimming events with a mark of 4:06.70 while teammate Chase Kent finished in second. MacDonald added his second win of the day in the 200 Fly, leading all Minutemen with a swim of 1:52.96 with Casey Ransford finishing right behind in second.
Luther Gordon led a UMass sweep of the top-three spots in the breaststroke events, coming in first with a time of 58.64 in the 100 Breast prior to winning the 200 later in the day. Ben Gryski finished as the runner-up in both while Owen Churchwell added a pair of third-place finishes.
Emerson Kiefer added a pair of distance wins during his first collegiate competition, touching the wall first in the 1,650 Freestyle with a time of 16:34.14 before taking first in the 500 Freestyle three events later. Tyler Pidde and Colby Vieira finished second and third respectively in the 1,650 Free.
Dias Konysbayev opened up his event wins by taking first in the 100 Free with a time of 47.73 to lead a UMass sweep of the top-three spots. The sophomore wrapped up his day with a win in the final individual race of the afternoon, posting a swim of 1:55.31 to win the 200 IM.
On the diving side, Noah Kanner led the UMass divers by taking first in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter Dives.
Charles Rothenberger edged out Konysbayev to win the 200 Free with a time of 1:45.74 and added runner-up finishes in both the 50 and 100 Free. Seamus Trzewik-Quinn and Ransford both added individual wins for the Minutemen in the 200 Back and 100 Fly, respectively.
The University of Massachusetts women’s swimming and diving team had six athletes finish with multiple individual event wins as the Minutewomen opened up their 2019-20 campaign with a 221-84 win over Colgate at the Lineberry Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.
Mariam Labib grabbed her first of two wins on the day in the 200 Free, posting a time of 1:56.79 to lead a trio of Minutewomen with Bella Snyder and Emily Rudiman finishing in second and third. Labib went on to post a winning time of 24.47 in the 50 Free while Chelsea Meiring and Kirsten Ardis finished in a tie for second with swims of 25.00.
Meiring went on to win the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:07.30 followed by top-three finishes from Mia Flagiello and Olivia Mozoki.
Snyder added a pair of wins of her own in the distance events, taking first with a mark of 17:51.59 to lead a UMass sweep of the top-three spots in the 1,650 Free before going on to win the 500 Free later in the day.
Fellow freshman Jane Denenberg opened up her afternoon with one of her two runner-up finishes as teammate Kelly Malyszka took in the 400 IM first before Denenberg went on to win her first collegiate event in the 200 Fly with a swim of 2:09.82. Denenberg followed up that performance with another top-time in the 100 Fly, clocking in a swim of 59.44 to lead all swimmers while Stephanie Judge came in second with a swim of 59.48.
Another freshman in Mozoki won a pair of events, picking up her first win with a time of 2:26.34 in the 200 Breaststroke before posting the top-time in the 200 IM to close out her day.
Sydnee Aubin picked up a pair of individual wins of her own, clocking in a swim of 1:00.74 in the 100 Back with Ardis finishing as the runner-up before Aubin went on to win the 200 Back with a mark of 2:10.90 while Denenberg rounded out the top-three finishers.
Maja Boric led the way for the UMass divers on the day, taking first in the 1-Meter Dive with a score of 266.62 before going on to claim the top spot in the 3-Meter Dive.
The Minutewomen added a sweep of the top-four spots in the 100 Free, led by Emily Rudiman’s time of 58.78 followed by Labib in second, Kelsey Cordery in third and Ardis in fourth.
The Minutemen and Minutewomen return to the pool next week when they head out on the road to take on Army West Point before heading to Fairfield on Saturday.

Massachusetts knocked off the Colgate Women’s Swimming and Diving team by a final tally of 221-84 Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium.
In her collegiate debut, Katie Hand had a strong showing. She finished third in the 200 Yard Fly with a time of 2:11.93.
Hand also combined with Carolyn Silverman, Lauren deTorres and Madison Sullivan in the 200 Yard Medley relay for a third place time of 1:50.83.
The relay team of Sullivan, deTorres, Lucy Bischof and Hand also won the 200 Yard Free relay when they touched the wall in 1:43.95.
Silverman had an individual top-3 finish when she claimed third with a mark of 1:01.62 in the 100 Yard Backstroke.
Beth Caruana swam well and finished second in the 200 Yard Backstroke with her time of 2:12.16. deTorres also claimed a second place time in the 200 Yard Breaststroke when she touched the wall in 2:29.69. deTorres touched the wall second in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:14.98 as well. Kiersten Daly was third in the event with a time of 2:18.22.
Taylor Atkin and Kelly Arel finished second and third respectively in the 500 Yard Freestyle with times of 5:38.09 and 6:01.58.
Caruana and Hand also had a 2-3 finish in the 100 Yard Fly with marks of 1:00.10 and 1:00.14.
The Colgate Men’s Swimming & Diving team was knocked off by Massachusetts 225-61 Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium.
The Raiders’ day was highlighted by a pair of top-3 finishes. Noah Zeigler came in third in the 400 Yard IM with his time of 4:30.68. Zach Duthie also claimed a top-3 finish when he crossed the line in 2:09.57 in the 200 Yard Fly to finish third. Ian Flowers was fourth in the event with his time of 2:11.87.
Colgate also got a pair of top-5 finishers in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Ehran Hodes touched the wall in 1:03.00 to claim fourth and Rienhardt finished in 1:06.01 to claim fifth.
