San Jose, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Women’s Swim team delivered an excellent performance this Saturday afternoon, taking nine of the day’s 16 events against the San Jose Spartans.
Resilient Relays
The women opened and closed the day with thrilling victories in the relay events, commencing with a triumph in the 200-yard medley and concluding with success in the 400-yard freestyle. Kicking off the day in style, the 200-yard medley team, featuring Hazel Derr, Ashley Ray, Tyryn Empremsilapa, and Gretta Callison, secured a dominant victory with a final time of 1:44.62. Derr also found individual success in the backstroke races, earning first in the 100 yard backstroke (56.89) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:03.85). Ashley Ray also achieved individual victory in the 100 yard breaststroke, taking first with a time of 1:03.76.
The golden wins continued for the Gauchos in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Regan Nibarger, Gretta Callison, Tyryn Empremsilapa, and Samantha Banos surging to the finish line in a swift 3:27.77. Beyond their contributions to the relay team, Nibarger and Banos delivered exceptional individual performances. Nibarger blazed to victory in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 51.85. Banos, on the other hand, showcased her prowess by dominating all three of her individual events. Her talent continues to be instrumental for the Gauchos, as she took home three golden wins in the 100 yard butterfly (56.13), the 200 yard individual medley (2:05.72) and the 200 yard butterfly (2:01.49).
Notable First-Place Achievements
Sophia Ryan triumphed in the demanding long-distance event of the 1000-yard freestyle, exhibiting her endurance with a commendable finish time of 10:33.94. Paige Gambetta showcased her speed and skill by clinching victory in the 200-yard freestyle, a shorter yet no less challenging race, crossing the finish line in an impressive 1:53.13.
Final Score
The day’s achievements earned the Gauchos a total of 157 points, procuring them a well deserved win over the Spartans who finished with 93 points.
