Laughlin Sets Pool Record as UC Davis Wins Dual Meet with Fresno State

UC Davis took down Fresno State in a dual meet on Friday, posting a final score of 160-132. That snapped a 5-meet winning streak for Fresno State. UC Davis’ Solie Laughlin set a new pool record in the 200 back to highlight the meet with a 2:00.04. Full results can be found here.

UC Davis:

DAVIS, Calif. – Freshman Solie Laughlin shattered a pool record in the 200-yard backstroke while she and junior Hilvy Cheung each posted the fastest times in two events, helping UC Davis to a 160-132 victory over Fresno State in a collegiate women’s swimming and diving dual meet at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday afternoon.

The Aggies moved their dual record to 3-2 on the year.

Laughlin posted a winning time of two minutes, 0.04 seconds to edge Bulldog freshman and Lithuanian National Team member Ugne Mazutaityte, who placed second at 2:00.29. Both swimmers surpassed the previous Schaal record of 2:02.12, set by Denver’s Kiristen Milberg back in 2009. Laughlin, who has broken the two-minute mark on three occasions thus far in 2015-16, also won the 100 back with a 56.53 mark — more than three-tenths faster than Mazutaityte’s runner-up time of 56.84.

Cheung easily won the 200 butterfly with a 2:03.59 early in the meet, leading a 1-2-3-4 Aggie sweep in the process. She later followed with a 55.91 in the 100 fly, besting the nearest competitor by better than a second. Laughlin and Cheung also took part in UC Davis’ first-place 200 medley relay, which won the opening event at 1:44.60.

Senior Lexy Troup (1,000 free), junior Kirsten Brand (200 free), senior Hailey Ferko (100 breaststroke), senior Lucy Lafranchise (1-meter diving) also captured event wins. Junior Elise Roberts and freshman Eva Chung tied for the victory in the 200 individual medley, while the 400 free relay foursome of Courtney Schultz, Mia Facey, Brittany Rojo and Brand teamed up for a meet-best 3:32.56 in exhibition during the finale.

Fresno State:

DAVIS, Calif. — Fresno State senior Leah Hatayama won two events — the 50-yard freestyle (23.53) and 100-yard freestyle (51.87) — in the Bulldogs’ swimming and diving team’s 160-132 loss to the UC Davis Aggies on Friday afternoon at the Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis, Calif.

Fresno State (5-2) saw its five-meet winning streak snapped as the Bulldogs dropped their seventh-straight match against UC Davis.

“UC Davis swam really well today and we just didn’t keep up,” Fresno State head coach Jeanne Fleck said. “Hopefully we learn from this experience and get some quality training in this week.”

Senior diver Lacie Ruth also earned an event victory for Fresno State with a win in the 1-meter diving competition (249.15) while Hailee Baldwin won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.75) and Casey Kennemann got a win in the 500-meter freestyle (5:07.40).

The Bulldogs will head to San Diego next week to participate in the annual Beach Cup next Friday and Saturday against San Diego, Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount.

The diving team will also compete at the UCLA Diving Invitational next Friday through Sunday.
