Multiple Canadian records have been taken down over the course of the past week, as Penny Oleksiak, Javier Acevedo, and the Markham Aquatic Club all solidified their names in the Ontario record books.
PENNY OLEKSIAK
Oleksiak has been on fire since April where she was one of the most dominant factors at the Canadian Team Trials at just 14-years-old. There, she solidified a spot on the World Junior Championships roster as did her coach, Bill O’Toole.
Most recently, Oleksiak took her talents down under to Australia in order to compete in the Australian age-group championships.
There, she’s been extremely dominant, picking up wins in the 200m IM, 100 fly, 200 fly, 100 free, and 200 free.
In addition she picked up a silver in the 50 free, a bronze in the 100 back, and a bronze in the 200 back.
Her medal haul included an Ontario record and personal best time in the 50m freestyle with a time of 26.06. That time was just three one-hundredths short of tying Taylor Ruck’s national record of 26.03.
JAVIER ACEVEDO
Javier Acevedo is on the fast track to becoming one of the top swimmers in Canada. Competing out of Ajax, both he and head coach Matt Bell were named to the World Junior Championships roster.
He was very solid at the Canadian trials earlier in April as he has been throughout the season. He headed to Mesa, Arizona for the Arena Pro Swim Series this past weekend to compete in some very fast international long-course swimming.
There, Acevedo set a new Ontario record in the 100m backstroke with a personal best time of 55.85. That time wasn’t too far off Markus Thormeyer’s 15-17 age-group national record that he set at Trials.
Acevedo has yet to put his name on the record board on a national level, but it seems as though with each meet he’s getting closer and closer to doing so.
MARKHAM AQAUTIC CLUB
The Markham Aqauatic Club boys broke the 13-14 Ontario record in the 4x100m freestyle relay at a time trial they held at the Markham Pan Am pool.
The previous record was held by Etobicoke Swimming at 3:39.
The same squad broke the short course 4x200m freestyle relay national record and the 4x100m medley relay national record earlier this season in a February meet.
Go Penny!
