COLLEGE STATION, Texas— A standout in pool and the classroom, Texas A&M swimmer Lisa Bratton, a 15-time All-American and a 2018 World Champion, has been awarded a $10,000 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Previously, Bratton also received a $10,000 H. Boyd McWhorter Postgraduate Scholarship from the Southeastern Conference.
Bratton, who received her bachelor’s degree in ocean engineering earlier this month, will pursue her master’s degree in ocean engineering while also training for the 2020 Olympic Games.
“I am very proud and honored to have received both this NCAA and the H. Boyd McWhorter post-graduate scholarships,” said Bratton, who completed her collegiate eligibility in 2018. “These will go a long way in helping me reach my goals of a doctorate in ocean engineering with the aim to one day work with offshore renewable energy sources. Being a student-athlete at Texas A&M has provided outstanding resources and developed me into the person I am today, ready to tackle the next stage of my life.”
From Richland, Wash., Bratton earned her bachelor’s degree while carrying a 3.761 overall grade point average, including a sparkling 3.904 GPA in her major. Bratton earned the 2018 Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award from the Department of Ocean Engineering and she has served as the President of Omega Epsilon, which is the ocean engineering honor society. Additionally, Bratton was named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for swimming and diving and the Bill Erwin Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2018.
Bratton remains Texas A&M’s school record holder in the 200-yard backstroke and with the 400 medley relay. Last December, Bratton became a world champion with a victory in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2018 FINA Short Course World Championships in Hangzhou, China. During her illustrious Texas A&M swimming career, Bratton won four SEC individual or relay titles while helping lead the Aggies to three SEC team crowns, as well as four top four NCAA team finishes.
Bratton was also active in the community having volunteered with Aggies Can, Big Event, Special Olympics Swimming, SARC (Sexual Assault Resource Center) fundraising, Brazos Valley Food Bank and Masters Swimming.
