McFarland High School repeated as the WIAA Boys Division II Champions, winning eight of 12 events on offer and setting four state records on the way to a commanding victory. The McFarland boys earned five individual event wins and all three relay wins, collecting 283 points to win at Waukesha South High School last week.
Rhinelander placed second with 235 points, 12 points ahead of the third-place Whitefish Bay.
The three TeBeest brothers were instrumental in McFarland’s team title. Each won four golds across their individual and relay events. Together, they factored in all eight medals the Spartans won.
The three opepend the meet with a state record as Blake TeBeest, Preston Nygaard, Cale TeBeest, and Shane TeBeest swam 1:29.88 in the 200 medley relay, crushing the previous standard (1:33.52) from three years ago as they brought the record sub-1:30 for the first time. The trio came together again on the closing 400 freestyle relay, teaming with Luke Rudie to clock 3:04.66 and win by 9.82 seconds.
Sophomore C. TeBeest also set an individual state record defending his title in the 100 butterfly. TeBeest swam a lifetime best 48.44, breaking Aidan Bellido’s 49.06 standard from 2023. TeBeest’s swim was his first under 49 seconds. He swam only one individual event in order to race on all three relays. He, Nygaard, Orry Landolt, and Rudie clocked 1:26.56 to win the 200 free relay.
His brother Blake, a fellow sophomore, also defended the titles he won during his freshman season. In a quick turnaround from the 200 medley relay, B. TeBeest won the 200 IM with a lifetime best 1:50.55. Later, he swam a lifetime best 48.11 for gold in the 100 backstroke, coming six-hundredths from the state record.
Finally, S. TeBeest, a senior and Indiana University – Indianapolis commit, won the 50 freestyle in a lifetime best 20.52. The swim was an improvement on both time and place, as he earned silver in this event a year ago. Later, he added a win in the 100 freestyle to complete the sprint sweep, swimming 45.16.
While McFarland’s top end speed was too much for the other programs to overcome in the team title race, it wasn’t only the MacFarland boys breaking records. Whitnall senior Ethan Schutten broke the state records in the 200 and 500 freestyle, closing his high school career with a bang.
First, he clocked 1:37.67 in the 200 freestyle, a lifetime best that improves the state record swum last season by .13 seconds. He ran away with his second event, the 500 freestyle, as he was the only swimmer to break 4:30, clocking 4:22.79. Another lifetime best, the time sailed under Isaac Fleig’s 4:26.64 record from 2022 by 3.85 seconds. Schutten is headed to the University of Minnesota in the fall and should fit in well with the team’s strong distance program.
Lastly, Julian Callender was the other non-McFarland swimmer to win gold in the pool. A senior from Stoughton, Callender led the 100 breaststroke final from start-to-finish, winning his third-straight title in the event with a 55.31.
