The TCU coaching staff will look a bit different in the fall of 2013 than it did in the spring of 2013.
The head coach, Richard Sybesma, will be the same, but he will add three new assistants to his staff, and all three, in fact, will be very new to collegiate coaching, period.
The best-known name of the group is former Texas High School State Champion Caroline Maxvill, who was a part of two Texas A&M Big 12 Championship teams as an undergraduate. She was also an Olympic Trials Qualifier as an athlete. After completing her education, she spent last season as the head coach of the Athens (Texas) High School programs. Athens’ girls placed 51st at the Texas 4A & Under (small schools) State Championship meet last year, with all three of their points coming from diving.
Sybesma has appointed her primarily to the IM group, and she will lead TCU’s junior varsity squad.
The second assistant named was John Funk, a former team MVP at Division I Rider University. He won a total of three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles in a senior by event, and two-time conference champion by team, including an NCAA B-cut in the 200 yard IM with a 1:47.56. His role is specifically the sprint events while working with the dryland and weight training program.
Ironically, the assistant with the most NCAA coaching experience is the one who didn’t swim in college. Adam Stoner took a different route to the NCAA coaching ranks – he chose to spend his four years at Division II Lockhaven University as a student-assistant with their women’s programs on his way to graduating in 2013.
He further built his resume by working at the Tennessee Swimming Camp. He has been named the team’s recruiting, video, and equipment coordinator. He served as a volunteer assistant at Lockhaven under TCU assistant Andy Waeger.
TCU begins their second season in the Big 12 with an exhibition against North Texas on September 20th, with their official season starting, for the women’s program, against Kansas in mid-October. Their full 2013-2014 schedule is below:
