A European Junior Record went down on the final night of competition in Rome, as Russia’s Daria Tatarinova powered her way to the wall in a time of 24.87 to take the women’s 50m freestyle.
En route to topping the podium, the 17-year-old punched the fastest time of her career, easily overtaking her 25.10 from the semi-finals. The Russian’s performance here at these European Junior Championships also erased the previous benchmark European Junior Record of 24.88, slicing .01 off of the standard to now own the record outright.
Tatarinova’s time would render her as the 7th fastest American 17-18-year-old ever.
This 50m free gold represented the Russian teen’s 5th medal of these Championships. She took the 100m free silver in addition to relay gold medals across the women’s 400m free, and mixed free and medley relays.
Finishing behind Tatarinova this evening was Croatia’s Jana Pavalic who gave her nation its first medal of these championships. Pavalic rocked 25.35 to near her own national record of 25.28 set during the semi-finals.
Rounding out the top 3 in bronze tonight was 14-year-old Eva Okaro of Great Britain. Okaro crushed a lifetime best of 25.33 in the semi and was just off that here in 25.45 to land on the podium. Her time from last night’s semi’s establishes a new British Age Record for 14-year-olds. For additional perspective Okaro’s 25.33 from the semi-final would rank her as the 2nd fastest American 13-14-year-old of all time.
