Sprinter Franziska Djatej Commits to Fresno State (2024), Adding Long-Term Relay Depth

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

High school senior Franziska Djatej has committed to swim at Fresno State next fall. Djatej hails from Spokane, Washington where she swims with the Spokane Waves Aquatic Team.

She attends Mead Senior High School in Spokane, which doesn’t sponsor a swimming program but that has several students who swim for the Spokane Waves. While she doesn’t participate in the high school season, she has scored big finals at several club meets – including the 2024 Western Zone Senior Championships and the 2023 Boise Sectionals.

At Zones in April, she finished 3rd in the 200 IM in 2:03.84 and 5th in the 100 fly in 56.19. Those swims, along with her 11th place finish in the 100 free (51.95), were all best times, and that was her last meet of record.

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 23.75
  • 100 free – 51.95
  • 200 free – 1:56.62
  • 100 fly – 56.19
  • 200 IM – 2:03.84

Djatej has had big drops since first announcing her commitment in the fall. For example, her 200 IM has gone from 2:06.22 to 2:03.84. While she committed as a top-tier sprinter, that 200 IM is arguably her best event as she heads off to California.

Her best time in the 200 IM would have placed her 6th on the Fresno State last season and in the C Final at the Mountain West Conference Championships.

She also would have scored a couple of points in the 100 fly.

The Bulldogs return most of their sprint core, including 49.93 100 freestyler Wiktoria Dabrowska and 22.90 50 freestyler Mackenzie Hutler, who contributed to a 3rd-place finish in the 200 free relay at last year’s Mountain West Championships. That will make it tough for Djatej to break into the sprint relays as a freshman.

Her addition is crucial for the team’s long-term depth, though; of their top four returning 100 freestylers next season, three are either seniors or grad students.

She joins a freshman class that includes Makaela PereaRyley Clark, and Sienna Cheng-Lucey, and British backstroker Ella Turner. While it’s a tight class, it’s a versatile one, with most of the group able to contribute in multiple events immediately – including fellow Western Zone finalist Sienna Cheng-Lucey, who would have made the B-Final at last year’s conference championship meet in the 100 back.
