South Carolina Gets Verbal Commitment from Ohio Backstroker Emma Otten

Fairfield, Ohio-native Emma Otten has made a verbal commitment to the University of South Carolina for 2017-18.

I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim at the University of South Carolina.

During my visit, I was so impressed with the campus, the professors and the academic programs that USC has to offer. The team is amazing and I felt as though I have already made some great friends. It was apparent that the coaching staff cares about each swimmer and their development.

I look forward to becoming a Gamecock and making contributions to this amazing team.

Otten is a senior at Fairfield High School, where she placed fourth in the 100 back at the 2016 Ohio State High School Division I Championships. She also swims for Countryside YMCA in Lebanon, Ohio. She scored two personal-bests at the 2016 YMCA Short Course National Championships, finishing 12th in the 100y back with 55.06 and 11th in the 200y back with 1:58.82. She also went best times leading off Countryside’s 200 medley relay (26.45), 400 free relay (52.65), and 800 free relay (1:52.60).

During the summer, Otten qualified second for the 100m back final at YMCA Long Course Nationals with her first sub-1:04 (1:03.78). She also earned PBs with her fifth-place finish in the 200m back (2:16.97), and again with her 12th-place in the 200m fly (2:20.97).

Her best events are:

SCY LCM
50 back 26.45 30.93
100 back 55.06 1:03.78
200 back 1:58.82 2:16.97
50 fly 27.69 30.31
100 fly 57.81 1:06.63
200 fly 2:02.87 2:20.97

Otten’s 100/200 back and 200 fly times would each have been among the Gamecocks’ top five performances in 2015-16.
