Sorenson Named SEC Women’s Swimmer of the Week, Smith & Curry Share Men’s Award

Men’s Co-Swimmers of the Week: Kieran Smith, Florida and Brooks Curry, LSU
Florida’s Kieran Smith, a senior from Ridgefield, Conn., finished with three first-place finishes in the win over No. 15 Auburn. Smith won the 200 free (1:32.96) and 500 free (4:18.16) with a pair of NCAA B-cut times. In his two relay performances, he had the fastest split in the 400 free relay (2:57.07/43.74) to boost Florida to a win the event.

LSU’s Brooks Curry, a junior from Atlanta, Ga., won two individual events and was a part of two winning relays against No. 23 Texas A&M. Curry reset his own pool record in the 50 free with a top time of 19.42 and claimed the top spot in the 100 free with a time of 43.76. He swam the second leg of the winning 400 free relay (2:57.96/42.39) and was also a member of the first-place 200 medley relay (1:27.96/18.96).

Men’s Diver of the Week: Juan Celaya-Hernandez, LSU
LSU’s Juan Celaya-Hernandez, a fifth-year senior from San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico, swept the springboard events against Texas A&M. Celaya-Hernandez posted top scores of 388.95 on the 1-meter and 447.15 on the 3-meter for his fifth sweep this season.

Men’s Freshman of the Week: Jordan Crooks, Tennessee
Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks, a freshman from George Town, Cayman Islands, won two individual events against No. 12 Georgia. Crooks touched the wall first in the 50 free (20.02) and the 100 free (43.84). He led off the 400 free relay that took second with a time of 2:56.72 (43.35) and also helped the Vols to a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay , which recorded a time of 1:26.95 (19.44).

Women’s Swimmer of the Week: Sophie Sorenson, Kentucky
Kentucky’s Sophie Sorenson, a senior from Ames, Iowa, recorded three NCAA B-cut times to earn two wins and a second-place finish at No. 11 Louisville. Sorenson set the Louisville pool record after winning the 200 back with a time of 1:52.11. She also took the top spot in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.77 and was runner-up in the 100 back with a time of 52.58. Sorenson anchored UK’s 400 free relay squad that placed third with a time of 3:20.96 (49.26).

Women’s Diver of the Week: Chiara Pellacani, LSU
LSU’s Chiara Pellacani, a freshman from Rome, Italy, swept both springboard events against No. 22 Texas A&M, her first meet as an LSU Tiger. Pellacani posted final scores of 315.45 on the 1-meter and 350.70 on the 3-meter.

Women’s Freshman of the Week: Ellen Walshe, Tennessee
Tennessee’s Ellen Walshe, a freshman from Dublin, Ireland, won two individual events and was a part of a winning relay in the win over No. 12 Georgia. Walshe led a Tennessee sweep of the 100 butterfly, recording a top time of 52.91. She followed that win a win in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.47. Walshe ended the day by helping UT’s 400 free relay secure the top time (3:20.01/50.99) and clinch the victory. She also swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay that finished second (1:39.25/22.30).
