CHICAGO, Ill. — The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team finished its final tri-meet in dominating fashion. The women’s team breezed past UIC and Valparaiso with final scores of 189-71 and 209-49. The men’s team also breezed by with scores of 149-102 and 200-44.
“Overall a very successful final regular season meet for the women, and a very good meet for the men as they prepare for their last dual Feb 10. Opening up with a school record 400 Medley Relay for the women got us off to a great start and there were a lot of outstanding performances the rest of the day” head coach Geoff Hanson said.
Key Salukis
Both the men’s and women’s 400-yard medley relay groups were victorious, getting the Salukis off to a strong start.
Fernanda Sanchez had the first place finish for the Salukis in the women’s 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:23.23. Susana Hernandez had the first place finish in the women’s 200-yard freestyle followed by fellow Saluki Bea Padron in second place. Celia Pulido finished the 100-yard backstroke in first with a time of 53.80.
The Salukis filled the podium in both the women’s 50-yard freestyle and the women’s 400-yard IM. Zaria Terry led the way in the 50-yard freestyle finishing first followed by Masha Zhukova, and Ava Rines. In the 400-yard IM Karen Rodriguez was victorious with fellow Salukis Brooklyn Anderson and Sam Vega.
For the men Alex Cimera had the first place finish in the men’s 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.33. Alex Santiago had the first place finish in the men’s 50-yard free followed by Donat Csuvarszki in second place. The 100-yard butterfly was all Salukis, with Jack Khrypunov in first followed by Nicolas Lanuza and Trey Smith. The 100-yard freestyle was all Salukis again with Alex Santiago in first with a time of 44.30.
“The men also put together a nice relay to start the session and carried through the meet really well” said Hanson.
Both the men’s and women’s teams were victorious in the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish the day off strong.
On the diving side Farida Moussa was the top scoring Saluki finishing the women’s 1-meter dive in third place with a score of 256.58. For the men Lee Haywood was the top Saluki finishing in third in the men’s 3-meter dive with a score of 294.60.
The men’s team will next compete at home against Ball State on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. for their final in season meet. The women’s team will next compete at the Missouri-Valley Championship in Evansville, Indiana starting on Feb. 21.
“With 2 1/2 weeks to the Women’s MVC Championships and 4 1/2 weeks to the Men’s MAC Championships we feel good about where we are, but still lots to work on” Said Hanson.

CHICAGO (Feb. 2, 2024) – In the last home meet of the 2023-24 season, the UIC swimming and diving teams came away victorious against Valparaiso but fell to Southern Illinois to split their second consecutive tri-meet at Flames Natatorium.

DIVING
Men’s
- Sophomore Bruno Carrillo (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) won the one meter diving board event with a score of 321.45 points.
- Sophomore Harrison Nolan (Riverside, Ill./Riverside Brookfield) finished in second on the one meter board with a score of 315.53 points. Junior Cole Tremewan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) placed fourth with 284.55 points.
- Tremewan closed out his night with a first-place finish on the three meter diving board (349.20 points). Carrillo placed second with a score of 319.65 points.
Women’s
- Sophomore Kerry-Leigh Morrison (Gauteng, South Africa/St. Mary’s School) collected another first-place finish on the three meter diving board with another NCAA zone cut score of 285.38 points.
- Junior Ciara McCliment (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) finished second on the three-meter board with 259.28 points. Junior Gabriella Richards (Saline, Mich./Saline) placed fifth with 230.25 points.
- Morrison completed her night with a second-place finish on the one-meter board with a score of 243.23 points. McCliment finished right behind her in third place with 239.78 points.
SWIMMING
Men’s
- Senior Liam Davis (Naperville, Ill./Plainfield North) edged out SIU’s Ian Marshall by inches to earn first place in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:01.92.
- Freshman Jack Mills (Toronto, Ontario/Lawerence Park Collegiate Institute) came in first in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:27.71. Classmate William Dvorak (Naperville, Illinois/Plainfield North), placed second with a 9:45.52 finish.
- Mills earned his second first place finish later in the meet with a win in the 500 freestyle, with a 4:38.48 finish.
- Junior Daniel Galinski (Elmwood Park, Ill./Elmwood Park) placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.30 seconds. Sophomore Aidan Foley (Plainfield, Ill./Lyons Township) finished right behind Galinski in third place in 57.73 seconds
- Junior Luke Wiesner (Chicago, Ill./West Chicago Community) was inches away from SIU’s Jered Moore in the 100 backstroke, finishing in second with a time of 50.20 seconds.
Women’s
- Freshman Molly Kroeger (Easton, Md./Easton) had strong performances in long distance races for the Flames, finishing third in the 1,000 freestyle (10:26.72) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:08.72).
- Senior Ashlee Weltyk (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.50 seconds.
- Junior Kendra Preski (Springfield, Ill./Glenview) placed third in the 200 freestyle with a 1:53.55 finish.
- Sophomore Madison Helmick (Bingham Farms, Mich./Birmingham Groves) completed the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.26 seconds, finishing in third place.

The Valpo men’s and women’s swimming teams took on UIC and Southern Illinois in a tri-meet Friday afternoon in Chicago, the Beacons’ final competition before the squads’ respective conference championship meets.
How It Happened
- A trio of Valpo swimmers posted fourth-place individual finishes on Friday. On the women’s side, freshman Olivia Tressler (Las Vegas, Nev./Desert Oasis) touched the wall fourth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:55.70.
- On the men’s side, sophomore Matthew Mantz (Spokane, Wash./Mead) claimed fourth with a time of 10:32.97 in the 1000 free and classmate Jackson Oostman (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) came home fourth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:11.62.
- Tressler paced the Beacon women in a pair of events, also leading the way for the Valpo contingent with a time of 5:36.88 in the 500 free.
- Junior Sara Strauss (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) took fifth place in the 100 free with a time of 54.78 and led Valpo as well with a time of 1:09.34 in the 100 breast.
- Freshman Gretchen Schmierer Knust (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) finished fifth in the 200 free, covering the distance in 2:05.97.
- Sophomore Anthony Martin (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) led the Valpo men in two individual events, placing fifth in the 100 free with a time of 47.90 while also swimming a team-best time of 21.80 in the 50 free.
Next Up
The men’s and women’s teams will split up for their respective conference championship meets to close out the 2023-24 season. The Valpo women return to action at the MVC Championships in Evansville, Ind. Feb. 21-24, while the men compete at the MAC Championships in Carbondale, Ill. March 6-9.
