Singapore Youth Record Holder Gan Ching Hwee Commits to Indiana for Spring 2022

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

A member of Singapore’s national team, Gan Ching Hwee has announced that she will be joining Indiana University in the spring of 2022, immediately following her high school graduation in December. Hwee holds a pair of junior national records in Singapore, as she is currently the fastest Under-17 in history in both the 800 and 1500, as well as the senior national record in the 1500. She currently trains with the Swimfast Aquatic Club in Singapore.

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to Indiana University to further my academic and swimming career! I chose IU because of the strong team culture and wonderful facilities for me to train and study. I’m also incredibly grateful for the support from my family, friends, and coaches. Can’t wait to be a part of this amazing team!! GO HOOSIERS!❤️🤍”

She has represented Singapore on the international stage on multiple occasions, most recently at the World Championships in 2019. At that meet, her top finish came in the 1500 free, where she finished in 21st with a time of 16:44.65.

At the Singapore Olympic Qualifier meet last December, she finished with the top time in three events. Sweeping the distance races, she won the 400 free (4:19.07), 800 free (8:51.35), and 1500 free (16:57.88). She also took second in the 200 free with a time of 2:03.86.

Best LCM Times (SCY Conversion)

  • 200 free – 2:01.88 (1:46.91)
  • 400 free – 4:16.42 (4:47.30)
  • 800 free – 8:42.23 (9:45.13)
  • 1500 free – 16:33.54 (16:14.05)

Indiana is coming off a season that saw them finish third at the Big Ten Championships behind Ohio State and Michigan. While the Hoosiers weren’t weak in the distance free races, the events weren’t their strongest either. In the 1650, they were outscored by 40 points by Michigan.

Last year, the Hoosier distance group was led by Josie Grote and Ella Ristic in the 1650 and 500, respectively. While Grote will graduate this year, Ristic was only a freshman last season, giving her and Hwee two and a half years of overlap.

Hwee will immediately bolster Indiana’s distance group, as her times were only just off the team’s fastest last season. With her converted time, she would have only been .3 slower than Josie Grote was in the 1650 at the NCAA Championships. In that race, Grote finished in 17th, narrowly missing out on scoring points in the race.

Gan Ching Hwee, Congratulations on your decision. To just say that we’re thrilled to have you would be an understatement! I hope that you end up loving Indiana University as much as I do. I believe that if you LOVE Indiana University, it will LOVE you back and take you to places and to heights that you never dreamed were possible. I told that to GOAT Coach, Ray Looze, and his lovely wife, Kandis, when they arrived in Bloomington in 2003 and they have fully embodied that statement since that very day.

In case you didn’t know some of the history of Indiana University swimming and diving, let me fill you in…. In the beginning, God created Bloomington, Indiana. In… Read more »
