Seminoles Secure FSU Fall Classic Sweep Over Georgia Tech, TCU & Liberty

Tallahassee, Fla.  –  The Florida State swimming and diving teams secured three wins on Saturday. Both the men’s and women’s team won the FSU Fall Classic and members of the women’s team also brought home the victory at the UNF Invite.

“It was a great way to start the year,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “I’m really proud of how the team competed hard and stayed positive throughout the meet. They kept a great team spirit through every event.”

The women opened the second day of the FSU Fall Classic at the Morcom Aquatic Center by winning the first three events.

The 400 medley relay won by five seconds behind Sarah Evans, Maddy Huggins, Sophie Freeman and Gloria Muzito with a time of 3:42.43.

Maysa Ratiu added a three-second win in the 500 free (5:00.28) and Huggins followed with a victory in the 200 breast (2:15.64).

Rookie Reese Hinnerichs was the runner-up in the 200 back and Freeman (2:01.73) and Edith Jernstedt (2:02.33) placed second and third in the 200 fly.

Huggins added her second win of the day, taking the 200 IM at 2:04.29.

The Noles finished the day in second place in the 200 free relay behind the team of Muzito, Evans, Jernstedt and Alexandra Dicks with a time of 1:34.19.

The women scored 231 points ahead of TCU (191), Georgia Tech (172) and Liberty (120).

Max Wilson, Tommaso Baravelli, Tobias Schulrath and Peter Varjasi won the men’s 400 medley relay with a time of 3:16.12.

Yordan Yanchev (4:23.47) and Utku Kurtdere (4:35.26) added second and third place points in the 500 free.  Baravelli was third in the 200 breast (2:03.13) and Jaka Pusnik took third in the 200 back (1:49.03).

Varjasi picked up a much-needed win in the 100 free (44.54) and Yanchev was third (45.03).

Kurtdere (1:48.61) and Brennan Hammond (1:49.48) placed first and second in the 200 fly and Mason Herbet was the runner-up in the 200 IM (1:48.87).

FSU closed out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay behind Varjasi, Jokubas Keblys, Yanchev and Herbet at 1:20.91.

Darwin Nolasco finished second on 1-meter to lead the Noles with a score of 324.20, while Izzy Gregersen was third (233.80).

“It’s early in the year for us but I like what we saw from our team,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “Darwin was the big cat today. He hit some great dives and for it only being September, he’s only going to get better.”

The men won the team title with a total of 238 points ahead of Georgia Tech (220) and TCU (170).

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Georgia Tech swim-dive concluded day two of the FSU Fall Classic with five first-place performances. 

Clarissa Sabin finished the day with a second-place time of 2:06.01 in the 200 IM, while Elizabeth Powley also had a second-place performance with 262.00 points on the women’s 3-meter.  

Tech also medaled in the 400 Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay, recording third-place finishes. In the 400 relay the team of Rothwell, Sabin, Ripkova, and Mrzyglod finished with a time of 3:49.79. In the 200 relay the team of Ripkova, Murphy, Mrzyglod, and Smith finished with a time of 1:35.53. 

Through 36 events, the women finished with a total of 172 points, ending the FSU Fall Classic in third place. 

The Yellow Jacket men also had success on Saturday, claiming first place in four events.  

Freshman Max Fowler had another impressive performance on the diving boards, finishing the day with 326 points on the men’s 1-meter board, claiming the center spot on the podium. Batur ÜNLÜ clinched the 500 Free, with a first-place time of 4:23.47. ÜNLÜ also finished in the second-place spot in the 100 Free with a time of 44.82.  

The Georgia Tech men’s team clinched first-place wins in both 200-meter events. In the 200 Breast, Nils Bognar finished with a time of 2:02.61. In the 200 Back, Berke Saka finished with a time of 1:47.24 to place second.  

In the 200 Free Relay the team of Justin Alderson, Unlu, Bognar, and Odorici also finished with a second-place time of 1:21.51. 

Through 36 events, the men finished with a total of 220 points, just 18 points behind first place Florida State.

Georgia Tech swimming and diving will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 11 as they head to Athens to take on Georgia in a dual meet.

TALLAHASSEE – TCU Swim and Dive competed in the first meet of the season on Friday and Saturday at the FSU Classic in Tallahassee, Fla.

The women’s team placed second in the four-team competition with a score of 191 and the men, third, with a score of 170 through 36 events.

Anna Kwong took home the gold on 3-meter securing her first Zone cut of the season with a score of 297.35. On 1-meter, Kwong placed second with a 246.30.

In the pool, Piotr Sadlowski swam the fourth-fastest time in school history in the 100 fly (47.96). Olivia Rhodes secured her first win of the season with a 51.57 in the 100 freestyle. Kito Camossato brings the gold back to Fort Worth with a victory in the 100 breast (55.43).

In her TCU debut, Tania Quaglieri broke into the top 10 in program history with a 55.27 in the 100 back. She earned her first victory in the 200 back swimming to a 2:02.56.

The women’s relays found much success in Florida bringing home the gold in both the 400 Free (3:25.38) and 200 Free (1:33.91). Both relays are comprised of Serena Gould, Mikayla Popham, Rhodes and Quaglieri.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Liberty opened up its 2023-24 swimming & diving season with a fourth-place showing at the Seminole Fall Classic, which wrapped up Saturday at Morcom Aquatics Center.

The host Florida State Seminoles won with 231 points, followed by TCU (191), Georgia Tech (172) and Liberty (120).

Notable

• Florida State and TCU both won four events today, while Liberty earned its first event win of the season when Kamryn Cannings claimed victory in the 200 fly.
• This weekend’s meet featured unique scoring, with two swimmers per team per event scoring points and one diver per team adding to the point total. One relay per school scored as well.
• Freshman Kamryn Cannings won the 200 fly by three tenths of a second over Florida State’s Sophie Freeman. Meanwhile, teammates Abbie Shaw (200 backstroke) and Mary Herndon (three-meter diving) both posted fourth-place finishes.

• This is the first time since Jan. 4, 2020 that Liberty has competed in the state of Florida for swimming & diving. That day, Liberty swept a quad meet at FGCU, defeating Tulane, Illinois State and the host FGCU Eagles. This is the ninth season in which Liberty has had a meet in the Sunshine State, opening the calendar years of 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 with meets in Florida.

Historically Speaking

• Kamryn Cannings’ 2:01.43 from this morning ranks seventh on Liberty’s all-time Top 10 performers list in the 200 butterfly.
• Liberty has four pairs of sisters on this year’s roster, in Kamryn and Kaycee Cannings, Ella and Shelby Kahn, Abbie and Grace Shaw, and Sadie and Sydney Stricklin. The Cannings sisters bookended the 200 free relay to end the meet, with Kamryn leading off and Kaycee anchoring.

Liberty will next compete at James Madison, Oct. 13 in Harrisonburg, Va. The Dukes finished second at the 2023 CCSA Championships and will now compete in the Sun Belt this season.
