SPOKANE, Wash. – After over a month without a meet, the Seattle U Redhawks returned to the pool in style at Whitworth. The Redhawks broke five different pool records, winning 13 events in the meet.
Will Corona broke a pool record from 1986, swimming a 1:40.94 in the 200 Free that was also the ninth-best time in Seattle U history, as well as earning the 100 Back title with a 51.37. Emmett Moore broke a ten-year-old pool record with his 50.32 in the 100 Fly, the best time this year by a Redhawk.
Sammy Mosier broke a 20-year-old pool record in the 50 Free, swimming a 23.98 that was the sixth-fastest 50 Free time in Seattle U history. Mosier was also a part of the 200 Free Relay team, along with Lydia Genson, Allison Plamondon, and Kalie Bui, that broke a pool record set in 1997. Genson also broke the 200 Free pool record with her time of 1:54.44.
Mosier, Corona, and Juan Varela all earned multiple individual event wins. Juan Varela took home event titles in the 1650 Free (16:26.11) and 500 Free (4:48.10). Corona earned both the 200 Free and 100 Back titles. Mosier won the 50 Free, the 100 Fly (57.36), and the 200 Medley Relay (1:49.02) alongside Genson, Bui, and Plamondon.
In addition to the 200 Medley Relay title, Genson and Plamondon each won individual events. Genson set a new season best for the Redhawks with her 1:54.44 in the 200 Free and took second in the 100 Back with a 59.70, just one one-hundredth of a second off her season-best time. Plamondon won the 100 Free with a 53.86 and took second in the 50 Free behind Mosier with her time of 24.77.
Four other Redhawks earned titles. The trio of Nicholas Imig (21.47), Tyler Goodspeed (21.85), and Noa Copp (21.91) swept the 50 Free for the Redhawks. Jack Neton won the 400 IM with a time of 4:11.58, finishing just ahead of George Thiss (4:12.49). Moore’s pool-record time of 50.32 won the 100 Fly. Bui earned a 100 Breast title with her 1:05.54.
Senior Day is next for the Redhawks, who will host Southwest Oregon Community College on Saturday, February 5 at 11:00 am PT. That will be the final meet before the WAC Championships, set to begin February 24.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Emma Thompson set a Megan Thompson Aquatic Center record in the 100-yard backstroke to lead the Whitworth women’s swimming team to a 113-64 win over visiting Seattle University on Friday night. The Seattle U men edged the Pirates 106-97.
Whitworth’s women defeated the NCAA Division I Redhawks for the second season in a row, however Seattle U only brought four women to this meet.
Thompson went 57.67 to win the backstroke by two seconds. Seattle’s Lydia Genson went 59.70, which was also under the previous pool record of 59.83 set by Blaise Wittenauer-Lee of Seattle U in 2016.
Ryan Reid won the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:09.02), the 500-yard freestyle (5:37.60) and the 400-yard I.M. (4:57.95) unopposed for the Pirates.
Thompson led off the winning 200-yard freestyle relay for Whitworth, which posted a time of 1:43.16.
Samantha Mosier set a second pool record of the night while winning the 50-yard freestyle in 23.98. Her time broke the previous mark of 24.14 set by Carla Fellezs of Puget Sound in 2002.
Genson also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.44 for the Redhawks.
The Pirate opened the meet with an upset win in the 200-yard medley relay. Ryan Grady, Andrew Lambert, Isaiah Ross and Zachary Washburn posted a time of 1:33.71 to edge the Redhawks by .71 seconds.
Jacob Goguen, who competed for Seattle U for four seasons before transferring to Whitworth for a Master’s degree, won the 100-yard freestyle for the Pirates in 46.93.
Ryan Grady led a 1-2-3 finish for the Whitworth men in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.21.
Goguen, Grady, Camren Langdon and Finn McClone closed the meet for the Pirates with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:24.58.
Whitworth will conclude the dual meet season on Saturday by hosting Whitman College at 1:00 pm.
